BOTANICAL
OVERVIEW:
Basil is an annual
plant that grows upright with many branches. This plant is a shrub that can
reach 100 cm in height. The flowers are arranged in upright clusters. The
leaves are long, erect, spur-shaped or oval, light green in color and smell
good. The tip of the leaf can be blunt or sharp, reaching 5 cm in length. The
surface is serrated or flat. It smells like cloves and tastes bitter[2].
HISTORY:
There is no exact time
when Basil Oil was discovered, but its use was recorded around 800 AD in China.
Although originally used in China, Basil Oil is mostly associated with India
due to the growing popularity of its healing properties as well as the use of
basil leaves in cooking. Basil Oil entrenches itself in various religions and
cultural practices, and is considered holy and sacred. Whether basil was buried
with the dead to help them progress to the afterlife, or hung in the home as a
symbol of good luck – its ancient uses are still widely practiced today, as
basil is used to form oils, powders, dry herb mixtures and is used in many
modern hygiene products. This crop is also easy to grow domestically, and can
be accessed by many countries in supermarkets if they wish[4].
