There is no exact time when Basil Oil was discovered, but its use was recorded around 800 AD in China. Although originally used in China, Basil Oil is mostly associated with India due to the growing popularity of its healing properties as well as the use of basil leaves in cooking. Basil Oil entrenches itself in various religions and cultural practices, and is considered holy and sacred. Whether basil was buried with the dead to help them progress to the afterlife, or hung in the home as a symbol of good luck – its ancient uses are still widely practiced today, as basil is used to form oils, powders, dry herb mixtures and is used in many modern hygiene products.
