BOTANICAL OVERVIEW:

Basil is a wild plant that can grow at an altitude of 0-1500 meters above sea level in full sunlight or shaded light intensity [4]. Basil is a type of annual herb (soft-stemmed plant), grows upright, 50-80 cm high, has brownish stems, is four-sided, has many branches at the top, has a fragrant smell. Single leaf, located opposite, has a stalk 0.5-2 cm long, the leaf blade is oval and elongated, the tip is pointed, the base is slightly tapered, the edge is serrated, the veins are pinnate, the surface of the leaf is smooth-haired with glandular nodules, long 3.5—7.5 cm, 1.5—2.5 cm wide, dark green, some purple. The flowers are white or purple, arranged in bunches 5-30 cm long, emerging at the ends of the branches. The seeds are hard, dark brown in color, when put in water they will expand like jam[5].

HISTORY:

The basil tree is known by the Latin name Ocimum basilicum which comes from the genus Ocimum. This plant is in the same genus as 35 other types of plants, such as Ocimum americanum, Ocimum campechianum, Ocimum gratissimum, Ocimum tenuiflorum, and many more. Basil plants have different names in each region. For example, in Java this plant is known as telasih, in Malay society it is known as selaseh, and amping and kukuru in Minahasa society. Meanwhile, in English, basil is known as sweet basil. The word basil comes from Ancient Greek, namely basileus, which means 'king'. Basil or sweet basil is an ancient type of plant that was known and cultivated during Egyptian rule around 3,000 years ago. Currently, basil plants are still cultivated, because they have various benefits [5]. In the past, basil oil was used in other religious and spiritual events such as in Judaism, which advocates the use of Basil to increase strength during fasting in traditional stories. In various Orthodox churches, Basil is often used to sprinkle or prepare holy water. Throughout history, the herb Basil, believed to have a strengthening effect on one's mind and emotions, has been used for a variety of uses and prepared in various forms, including tea, dry powder, and oil. Basil's natural anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibiotic, antiviral, anti-depressant and diuretic properties make it a common component in traditional medical practices in Asia, such as in India, where it is known as “Tulsi” and is thought to be sacred[6].
