most abundant and characteristic of which is myristicin. According to
the Indonesian National Standard (SNI 06-2388-2006) the requirement for
myristicin content in nutmeg essential oil is at least 10%. Myristicin
can actually be used as an insecticidal agent, flavor enhancer in
cigarettes, chemopreventive and hepatoprotective, but this compound can
give the same hallucinatory effect as narcotics. Along with the times,
this nutmeg essential oil is even used as a raw material for

Nutmeg belongs to the Myristicaceae family of the Plantae kingdom. It grows to a height of 20m and is believed to be an evergreen tree. The leaves are thick. The flowers are small and appear yellow. Nutmeg is harvested for seeds, coated with seeds (arillus), and the flesh of the fruit. In trade, the nutmeg coating is called mace, or in English it is called mace, in pharmaceutical terms it is called myristicae arillus or macis). The flesh of the nutmeg is called myristicae fructus cortex. Nutmeg is a plant that takes a long time to grow until harvesting. The first harvest is done 7 to 9 years after the tree is planted and reaches maximum production capacity after 25 years. Its growth can reach 20m and its age can reach hundreds of years.
Nutmeg plants are spread in regions or countries that have tropical climates, including Guangdong and Yunan in China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Grenada in the Caribbean Islands, Kerala in India, Sri Lanka, and South Africa, especially also in their country of origin, namely Indonesia. In Indonesia, the main producers of nutmeg are the Maluku Islands, North Sulawesi, West Sumatra, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, West Java, and Papua.
Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) has a high value as a spice, fruit and nutmeg seeds have been an important trading commodity since Roman times. Nutmeg is mentioned in Pliny's encyclopedia "Old Man". Since the time of European exploration, nutmeg is widespread in other tropical areas such as Mauritius and the Caribbean (Grenada). The term nutmeg is also used for traded nutmeg seeds.
The age of the nutmeg plant is quite long, it can even reach 100 years. Indonesia supplies around 60% of the total demand for the world nutmeg market every year. West Java is one of the centers for nutmeg production. In 2008 alone, the area of ??nutmeg was recorded at around 4049 hectares with a production of 778 tons and an average plant productivity of 359 kg/hectare, which is higher than the national nutmeg crop productivity. Sukabumi and Bogor regencies are the areas with the largest nutmeg production in West Java. In addition, in West Java, there are also many nutmeg processing industries that are growing more rapidly than other regions, including essential oils and candied nutmeg.
