Extraction method: Steam distillation
DESCRIPTION:
Our Agarwood Essential
Oil is obtained from the extraction of the heart of Agarwood Bouya (Aetoxylon Sympetalum) using the steam distillation method. The oil produced is
a clear to thick liquid with a yellow to brownish color. This oil has a
distinctive aromatic and sweet woody aroma. The raw materials used are trees
that have been infected with parasitic fungi (Phialophora parasitica and
others) which are the source of this rare and very valuable material. Infected
trees will produce oleoresin that, after a few years, becomes dark and highly
aromatic. Oleoresin accumulates to such an extent that the mass and density of
infected wood causes it to sink in water. Agarwood oil has become popular as
the base ingredient for the legendary Arabic perfume called Oud[1,2,6].
BOTANICAL AT A
GLANCE:
Agarwood comes from
the families Thymelaeaceae, Euphorbiaceae, and Leguminoceae with the genera
Aqullaria sp., Aetoxylon sp., Enkleia sp., Gonystylus sp. This tree is endemic
to the island of Kalimantan. Agarwood is generally found growing in plain
primary and secondary forest habitats, and grows well along hillsides and
ridges, up to a height of 750 m. The distribution of this tree extends from the
Indian continent to Myanmar, the Malay Peninsula and Kalimantan Island, as well
as the Philippines. The source tree for
our Agarwood essential oil comes from Kalimantan which is harvested and
replanted periodically to ensure it is sustainable. They were manually
inoculated when they reached 10 years of age; After being infected, it is
allowed to propagate for 2 years, the tree is harvested for distillation.
Aetoxylon sympetalum
is a tree that grows to a height of around 18 - 40 meters. The stem is
straight, sometimes with a fluted base, and about 30 - 60cm in diameter. This
plant takes a minimum of 10 years to grow fully. The wood is one of the most
valuable woods in the world. The essential oil obtained from this tree is very
fragrant and the most expensive. Various species can grow in Indonesia (Aceh,
Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Papua and Sumbawa). Type & variety,
geographical location, part of the tree, length of time of infection (sap comes
out when the stem is injured), and harvesting and processing methods influence
the aromatic quality of gaharu essential oil [3,10,12].
HISTORY:
Black Oud (Aetoxylon
Sympetalum) essential oil is a variety similar to agarwood which is part of the
Ouds family. It originates in Indonesia, on the island of Kalimantan. The wood
and its oil have been used for centuries to treat emotional, nervous and psychological
problems, thanks to its ability to induce a deep meditative state. In its
history thousands of years ago, the Sriwijaya kingdom became an important
historical presence of gaharu in Indonesia.
Sriwijaya is famous as
a trader in spices, camphor, sandalwood, agarwood, ivory and gold and silver,
this trade is in Barus. The Porsea Batak tribe is known to sell gaharu to Arabs
and Persians using the Asahan river route. In Indonesia there are several local
names for gaharu, the most popular is Gaharu, in local languages such as
Malay it is called Karas or Depu, in Batak it is called Hau Halim, in Lampung
it is called Kayu Alim, in Minang it is called gaharu with Kayu Kareh.
Agarwood oil is
generally known as Oudh, Oud, Agarwood, Agar, Eaglewood, Aloeswood and
Agarwood. This tree is claimed to originate from various parts of the world,
including India, Malaysia, South China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia, the
Philippines and Cambodia.
Agarwood essential oil has been a very important cultural and religious custom since ancient times in various civilizations. Incense and perfume made from agarwood oil are highly valued for spiritual, luxurious, and aphrodisiac purposes. References are found in Hindu, Islamic, Christian, and Buddhist texts. The spiritual and religious use of agarwood is used in medicine [4,5,6,11].
