BOTANICAL
OVERVIEW:
Sweet anise or aniseed
(Pimpinella anisum) is a type of flowering plant from the Apiaceae family that
originates from the eastern Mediterranean and southwest Asia. This plant is an
annual herb that can reach a height of one meter. The leaves at the base of
this plant are simple, 2–5 cm long, and have shallow lobes, while the leaves at
the higher part of the stem are pinnate like feathers and are divided into many
leaflets. The flowers are white, 3 mm in diameter, and clustered in large
flower umbrellas. The fruit is a dry, oval-shaped schizocarp 3–5 mm long[2].
HISTORY:
Anise was cultivated by the ancient Egyptians as a medicine and cooking spice, anise is often considered “refreshing” due to its restorative properties. Anise was also popular in ancient Greek and Roman medicine and was praised by many of their leading figures as a mood-enhancing aid. The Romans used the plant for its spice and licorice flavor. Europeans used the seeds as rat bait, while the seed oil was used as pigeon poison. In addition, this plant is one of the oldest recorded plants in the world[3].
In fact, anise was once so valuable that it was used as currency, as well as to scent clothes during the 15th century. The sweet aroma of the anise plant reminds us and can trigger joy. Its soothing and healing abilities can relieve various types of discomfort and help ensure health and well-being for its users[4].
