DESCRIPTION:
Frankincense (Stryrax sp), which belongs
to the Stryraccaceae family of the Ebeneles order, is a typical North Sumatran
incense that is spread across seven districts, especially in North Tapanuli,
Humbang Hasundutan, West Pakpak and Toba Samosir districts. Frankincense is in
the form of dried sap taken from the frankincense tree. This sap is commonly
known as benzoid, which means sweet-smelling sap. Our benzoin oil is obtained
from the steam distillation process of Toba frankincense sap/resin. The oil has
a very sweet, warm, vanilla-like aroma with subtle notes of cinnamon and a
golden brown color. Benzoin oil has been highly valued throughout history for
its calming and uplifting effects on the body, mind, and spirit[1].
BOTANICAL OVERVIEW:
Frankincense trees have medium to large
sizes with a diameter of between 20-30 cm and a height of 20 to 30 meters. It
has straight stems with few branches and reddish bark. Frankincense has single
leaves that are spirally arranged and oval in shape, round and elongated with
tapered leaf tips. Frankincense fruit is round and oval in shape and is quite
small in size. The brown seeds are encased in thick, hard flesh. The place
where this incense plant grows varies, from the lowlands to the highlands at an
altitude of 60 to 2100 meters above sea level. Frankincense plants do not
require special requirements for soil type. Benzoin can grow in Podzolic,
Andosol, Latosol, Regosol, and various other associations ranging from heavy to
light textured soil and less fertile to fertile soil. This type of plant grows
in soil that has high porosity so it easily absorbs water [4].
HISTORY:
Although benzoin essential oil is
currently popular for its vanilla aroma and other medicinal properties, it has
actually been around for a long time. Praised for its strong vanilla and balsam
aroma, ancient papyrus records are believed to suggest that benzoin resin was
traded to China and Egypt via the Red Sea. At that time, the resin was usually
ground into a powder with other aromatic ingredients such as pine, juniper, and
cypress, which was then turned into incense. It is also believed that the
Sultan of Egypt would send it as a gift to the Doge of Venice and the Queen of
Cyprus.
The use of benzoin resin can be traced
back to Ancient Roman and Greek times, where benzoin was used in incense and
potpourri. Resin was also a common element in religious ceremonies, where the
Maya used frankincense aromatically because they believed it could ward off
evil spirits.
Later, benzoin was discovered in England in the 15th century. This incense was brought by traders in powder form, which was used in the perfume worn by Queen Elizabeth I. Known as 'Incense from Java', it later began to be used for medicinal purposes. Even Nostradamus, the world famous French astrologer, classified benzoin as a tonic for skin infections in 1556[3].
