BOTANICALS:

The natural distribution of eucalyptus plants is in the Maluku Islands (Ambon, Buru and Seram Islands), Timor Island, and northern and southwest Australia. This plant is native to Indonesia. In the Maluku Islands and Timor Island, eucalyptus plants can be found as natural stands, while on Java Island (East Java, West Java and Central Java) they are monoculture stands. Melaleuca cajuputi subsp. Cajuputi, consists of 3 subspecies, namely: 1) subsp.cajuputi Powell, 2) subsp. cumingiana (Turcz.) Barlow, and 3) subsp. Barlow's platyphylla. Vernacularly called Cajeput or White Samet, Melaleuca Cajeputi is a large tree that grows up to 100 feet tall. The Cajeput tree is evergreen and can reach a height of up to 30 meters. They usually have whitish, spongy bark with twisted stems. This evergreen tree from the myrtle family is native to Indonesia. When blooming, the flowers are white, cream, or pale yellow at the tip of each branch[3,4].

HISTORY:

Indonesia is one of the largest producers of eucalyptus oil and the largest consumer. It can be found close to the coastline on Papua's Buru Island and in parts of Central Papua. Indonesia produces around 325-350 MT per year, making it one of the essential oils produced in the largest volume in Indonesia.

This oil is mainly used in massage oils, treating stomach aches, common cold, nausea, and insect bites. More than 90% of the oil produced is consumed locally by the pharmaceutical industry. Eucalyptus is Indonesian Papuaban over Chinese Eucalyptus. Both are used in similar applications cajeput is also common in other Southeast Asian countries.

In Malaysia and other Indonesian islands, eucalyptus is considered a valuable treatment for cholera, colds, flu, headaches, rheumatism, throat infections, toothache, muscle aches, and for various skin conditions. It is highly valued for its antiseptic, carminative, and analgesic properties.

Australian natives used it as follows: Eucalyptus has been used by the natives of Groote Eylandt for the treatment of aches and pains. The leaves are crushed in the hands and applied topically. Sometimes young leaves and twigs are crushed and soaked in hot water, the liquid is used to bathe the affected area, the rest is poured on the head. The crushed leaves are inhaled to cure headaches.

Cajeput was first introduced to Europe in the 17th century, and its oil was an expensive and rare commodity until the Dutch acquired territory in Papua (believed to be the origin of Cajeput). It is thought that eucalyptus was first mentioned in The Natural History of Simple Drugs by Dr. G Guibourt in 1876. He described the properties of eucalyptus as an antiseptic for intestinal problems, dysentery, colitis, urinary complaints, cystitis and urethral infections.

Today, eucalyptus essential oil is widely used for respiratory conditions to reduce respiratory discomfort and distress, especially nasal and chest congestion. It is also used as an effective topical pain reliever for injuries, arthritis, gout, back pain, sciatica, neuralgia, and neuritis[5].
