BOTANICAL AT A
GLANCE:
Cinnamomum camphora
(commonly known as camphor tree or camphorwood) is a large evergreen tree that
grows to 20–30 m (66–98 ft) tall[3]. The leaves have a shiny, waxy appearance
and smell like camphor when crushed. In spring, C. camphora produces bright green
leaves with masses of small white flowers. C. camphora produces clusters of
black, berry-like fruit about 1 cm (0.39 in) in diameter. The pale bark is very
rough and has vertical cracks. Cinnamomum camphora originates from China south
of the Yangtze River, Taiwan, southern Japan, Korea and Vietnam, and has been
introduced to many other countries [4]. The bark is yellow or brown and splits
vertically. The alternate leaves have three to several distinct veins, and the
strong active shoots are surrounded by large silky recesses[7].
HISTORY:
Camphor Essential Oil
comes from the botanical Cinnamomum camphora and is also referred to as True
Camphor, Common Camphor, Camphor Gum, and Formosan Camphor. Native to the
forests of Japan and Taiwan, it is also known as Japanese Camphor and Hon-Sho.
Before the Camphor Tree was introduced to Florida in the late 1800s, it was
widely cultivated in China. As its benefits and applications became more
popular, its cultivation eventually spread to more countries with tropical
climates that favor the growth of this tree, including Egypt, South Africa,
India, and Sri Lanka. Early varieties of Camphor Oil were extracted from
forests and the bark of Camphor trees that were twenty-five years old or more.
However, when producers finally realized the benefits of preserving the
environment by avoiding cutting down trees, they also realized that the leaves
were much better for extracting oil, as they had a faster regeneration rate.
For centuries, Camphor Essential Oil has been used by the Chinese and Indians for religious and medicinal purposes, as its vapors are believed to have healing effects on the mind and body. In China, the sturdy and fragrant wood of the Camphor tree was also used in the construction of ships and temples. When used in Ayurvedic medicine, it is a medicinal herb intended to treat cold symptoms, such as coughing, vomiting, and diarrhea. It's beneficial for treating everything from skin ailments like eczema, to problems related to flatulence like gastritis, to stress-related problems like low libido. Historically, Camphor was even used in medicine to treat speech disorders and psychological disorders. In 14th century Europe and in Persia, Camphor was used as a disinfectant in fumigation during plague times as well as in embalming procedures[5].
