BOTANICAL AT A GLANCE:

Juniperus virginiana var. virginiana is called eastern juniper/red cedar. It is found in eastern North America, from Maine, west to southern Ontario and South Dakota, south to northernmost Florida and southwest to the post oak savanna of east-central Texas. Cones are larger at 0.16 to 0.28 inches (4 – 7 mm); the leaves have acute scales at the apex and the bark is red-brown.

Eastern red cedar is a slow-growing, densely branched evergreen species of coniferous tree that may never become more than a shrub in poor soil, but usually grows to a mature height of 15 to 60 feet (5 – 20 m) or rarely to 90 m. Legs tall (27 m), with short trunk, diameter at breast height 12 to 40 inches (30 - 100 cm) or rarely up to 70 inches (170 cm). One of the oldest trees reported, from Missouri, is 795 years old[3].

HISTORY:

Cedarwood oil is obtained from the steam distillation of cedar tree wood, of which there are several species such as Cedrus atlantica, Cedrus deodara, Juniperus mexicana, and Juniperus virginiana which are better known as Atlas, Himalayan, Texan, and Virginian.

Throughout history, Cedarwood Essential Oil has been used by various cultures, such as Native American and Tibetan communities. In Ancient Egypt, Cedarwood Oil was used in mummification procedures. Cedarwood is also known to calm the body and mind, making it ideal for use in religious ceremonies and spiritual practices, such as communal prayer and independent meditation. There is a lot of evidence showing how this oil was used by ancient cultures for its antiseptic and sedative properties. The Sumerians used cedarwood essential oil in various applications such as using it as a base for decorative paint on pots.  Today, it continues to be used for similar applications and also for cosmetic applications[4,5].
