Anthemis nobilis essential oil (Roman
Chamomile) has various therapeutic benefits that have been used for centuries
in traditional medicine and are supported by scientific research. One of its
main benefits is its calming and sedative effects, which help reduce stress,
anxiety, and insomnia. Flavonoid content such as apigenin and esters such as
isobutyl angelate play a role in calming the central nervous system, making it
effective in improving sleep quality and reducing emotional tension.
Additionally, Roman chamomile oil has anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving
properties, thanks to its chamazulene and bisabolol content, which help relieve
inflammation in conditions such as arthritis, muscle pain, headaches, and
menstrual pain.
This oil is also widely known in skin care for its soothing and healing properties. Its active compounds are effective in treating eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, burns, acne, and skin aging by protecting against free radical damage. Additionally, Roman chamomile works as a carminative, which helps relieve digestive disorders such as bloating, nausea, stomach cramps, and colic in babies. The antimicrobial and wound-healing properties of this oil also make it useful in treating skin infections, speeding up wound healing, and maintaining oral health.
In women's health, Roman chamomile oil is often used to relieve menstrual pain and PMS discomfort, help balance hormones, and support pregnancy and childbirth with its relaxing effects on smooth muscles. In addition to its wide range of therapeutic benefits, this oil is also often used in aromatherapy, where its gentle, calming scent can promote relaxation, relieve emotional tension, and help children who have trouble sleeping or are fussy. With these benefits, Anthemis nobilis oil remains one of the most valued essential oils in the world of natural health and aromatherapy.

BOTANICAL
OVERVIEW:
Anthemis nobilis,
known as Roman Chamomile, is a perennial herbaceous plant in the Asteraceae
family. It is native to Western Europe, particularly in areas such as England
and France, and thrives in temperate climates with loose, well-drained soil.
Morphologically, A. nobilis has short, creeping stems about 10–30 cm tall,
double-pinnate grayish-green leaves, and daisy-like flowers with white petals
and a convex yellow center about 1.5–2.5 cm in diameter. Other distinctive
characteristics include a sweet, mild aroma similar to apples, making it
popular in aromatherapy and traditional medicine[4,5,6,7].
HISTORY:
Chamomile has long been recognized as one
of the world’s most ancient and widely used medicinal plants. Its use can be
traced back to ancient Egypt, where chamomile flowers were offered to the sun
god Ra in honor of its healing properties, particularly in treating acute
fevers. Chamomile was also used in embalming and skin care by Egyptian
noblewomen, as recorded in ancient hieroglyphics. The Romans used chamomile in
medicine, drinks, and incense, while the Anglo-Saxons considered it one of the
nine sacred plants used in ceremonies and healing. In the Middle Ages, Roman
chamomile was often used as a “sprinkle herb” to freshen the air during public
gatherings and celebrations; when stepped on, the flowers gave off a pleasant,
fruity aroma. Chamomile was also added to beer to impart a bitter taste before
eventually being replaced by hops. Cultivation of chamomile began in the 16th
century, and it has since become a mainstay of medical practitioners in Europe
and the United States for its many health benefits.
There are two most popular varieties of chamomile, Roman chamomile (Anthemis nobilis) and German chamomile (Matricaria recutita). Both are from the Compositae family and have similar medicinal properties, although German chamomile is considered more potent and has received more scientific evaluation. German chamomile is believed to have anti-inflammatory, carminative, sedative, antiseptic, and spasmolytic properties, while Roman chamomile is known to have carminative, antiemetic, antispasmodic, and sedative properties. Morphologically, Roman chamomile is a low-growing perennial herb with small, daisy-like flowers, while German chamomile is an annual that can grow up to 60 cm tall with larger flowers and a cone-shaped yellow center. Both varieties contain the essential oil chamazulene, with a higher concentration in German chamomile, which gives it a sweet, apple-like aroma. Chamomile essential oil has been used to treat a variety of conditions, including insomnia, digestive disorders, skin inflammation, and bacterial infections. Additionally, chamomile is used in cosmetics and hair care products for its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. The use of chamomile as a medicinal plant has been well documented across cultures and civilizations. This plant is listed in the pharmacopoeias of 26 countries and has been used to treat a variety of conditions, from insomnia, back pain, neuralgia, rheumatism, skin conditions, digestive disorders, flatulence, headaches, to gout[2,8].
