BOTANICAL AT A
GLANCE:
The cocoa plant is a
member of the Sterculiaceae family which originates from Central and South
America with tropical climates. The genus Theobroma includes 22 species;
however, Theobroma cacao is the only species of global economic importance. Its
name was given by botanist Carl Linnaeus in 1937, who proposed the genus
Theobroma meaning food of the gods (“Theo” and “broma” are Greek words meaning
“God” and “food,” respectively). The word cacao reportedly comes from the Olmec
and Maya words kakaw, and was later adopted by the Aztec language Nahuatl with
the word cacahuatl. Cocoa plants are trees that can reach a height of 4.5 - 7
meters after 12 years of age. Cocoa plants have a taproot system which is one
of the general characteristics of dicotyledonous plants[3,4]
HISTORY:
Cacao is originally believed to have originated in the Amazon Orinoco Basin more than 4,000 years ago, but was used primarily for the sweet pulp that surrounds the seeds in the pod. It most likely spread through Central America from Ecuador by humans along coastal trade routes. By 1800 BC, Theobroma cacao had spread to the Soconusco region of Guatemala and the Pacific coastal plain of Chiapas, Mexico. This is where cocoa is believed to have first been cultivated and used for its beans. The Barra people – the first Mesoamerican pottery-using culture – are believed to have been the first to process chocolate and consume it in drinks. From here, cacao spread north to the Olmec people of the Gulf Coast of Mexico and then to the Maya civilization of the Yucatán Peninsula between 600 and 400 BC[5].
