BOTANICAL AT A
GLANCE:
Javanese citronella or
Cymbopogon winterianus is a hardy, aromatic, evergreen, perennial,
clump-forming grass with many erect stems emerging from short rhizomes. The
stems can reach a height of 2.5 meters. This plant is often cultivated,
especially in Java and Southeast Asia, because of the essential oils contained
in its leaves. This species produces twice as much essential oil as Cymbopogon
nardus (which is mostly grown in Sri Lanka), and the quality of the oil is
better.
Javanese Citronella is
a humid lowland tropical plant, where it is found at altitudes of up to 1,000
meters. Grows best in areas with annual daytime temperatures ranging between 22
- 30°C, but can tolerate 16 - 36°c. It prefers average annual rainfall in the
range of 1,500 – 2,200mm, but tolerates 1,000 – 4,100mm. Grows best in dry to
moist, well-drained soil and a position in full sun. Some forms of the plant
can tolerate waterlogging, prefer a pH in the range of 5 - 6, tolerate 4.3 – 8.
The first cutting is usually carried out 180 - 270 days after planting,
subsequent harvests are carried out every 90 - 120 days and the harvest lasts
for 4 - 5 year, as yields continue to decline. The average yield of essential
oils is usually between 45 - 110 kg/ha. Cultivars have been developed in India
with yields of up to 385 kilos per hectare[3].
HISTORY:
Citronella is a plant
native to Southeast Asia, including Indonesia. The brief history of citronella
in Indonesia begins in the early 20th century when the plant began to be grown
commercially in Java and Sumatra.
Initially, citronella
was grown as an ornamental plant and was also used as a base for essential oils
which have many benefits, such as natural insecticides, antioxidants and
antifungals. However, in the 1930s, the Dutch government began to encourage mass
planting of citronella in Indonesia to meet the need for citronella oil used in
the perfume and cosmetics industry.
Since then, Indonesia
has become one of the largest producers of citronella in the world. Regions
that are famous for producing citronella in Indonesia include East Java,
Central Java and West Sumatra. Lemongrass is also an important export commodity
for Indonesia and has the potential to continue to grow in the future[4].
Javanese Lemongrass
Essential Oil, or Cymbopogon Winterianus, is grown in many hot climates around
the world, although 40% comes from China and Indonesia. The main components in
Java Citronella are Citronellal, Geraniol, Geranyl Acetate, Citronellol, and
Limonene[5]. Some Asian cultures use citronella for its medicinal properties in
reducing fever, eliminating intestinal parasites, relieving digestive and
menstrual problems, stimulating the body system and repelling insects,
especially mosquitoes[6].
Javanese Lemongrass Essential Oil is highly sought after by natural perfumers for its beautiful and complex aromatic profile. This oil has a fresh, strong, lemon-like aroma and the Citronellal and Citronellol content is higher than the Ceylon or Nardus varieties. This means that the antiseptic and antimicrobial action will be stronger so that the deodorizing effect will also be more effective [7].
