Clary sage is an aromatic essential oil-carrying herb. Our clary sage oil is obtained from the extraction of Salvia sclarea leaves using the steam distillation method. The oil produced is a pale yellow to yellow liquid with a fresh, sweet, spicy and floral aroma. This oil is widely used in aromatherapy to help relieve stress, anxiety and support women's menstrual health. Apart from that, this oil has been widely developed in the medical, agricultural, culinary and cosmetic industries. The main compounds found in Clary sage are monoterpene alcohols such as linalool, geraniol, nerol, α-terpineol; monoterpene esters such as linalyl acetate, neryl acetate; sesquiterpene hydrocarbons such as germacrene-D, α-copaene; oxygenated sequiterpenes such as caryophyllene oxide; and diterpenes such as sclareol. The compound provides bioactivity effects such as antimicrobial, antianxiolytic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and cytotoxic [1,2].

BOTANICAL AT A GLANCE:

Clary sage originates from Southern Europe and is cultivated throughout the world, especially in the Mediterranean region, Russia, the United States, England, Morocco and Central Europe. Clary sage (Salvia sclarea L.) is a biennial or short-lived member of the mint family. The pink to white flower stalks produced in the second year can reach 5 feet in height. Plants planted in autumn will bloom next year, after vernalization. This plant is adapted to dry climates and produces more oil at low fertility and humidity. Oil yields of 0.15% (on a fresh weight basis) were reported from plants grown on poor soils in the highlands, whereas yields of only 0.07% were obtained from plants on fertile soils. Clary sage oil has an odor similar to ambergris and is used in perfume, soap, cosmetics, aromatherapy, and as a flavoring, especially for muscatel wine. This plant also has medicinal uses. Essential oils are obtained through a steam distillation process. Absolutely small amounts are produced by solvent extraction[3,4].

HISTORY:

Clary sage was originally praised by the Greek philosopher Theophrastus in 400 BC, among other physicians, for its effectiveness as an eyewash as well as its powerful cooking properties. 17th-century herbalist Nicholas Culpeper even dipped plants in batter and fried them as a way to help and prevent back pain. Following from this use, healers warned of the powerful aphrodisiac effects of mixing clary sage with alcohol in the sixteenth century.

Clary sage has also historically been used for flavoring and also in perfumery due to its naturally mild yet distinctively herbaceous aroma. Clary sage's ancient reputation as a miraculous healing agent is well-deserved. The myriad of applications and medical benefits that clary sage provides makes it one of the most versatile oils out there. Although its sweet floral scent makes it a welcome addition to any aroma therapy experience. Derived from the well-known medicinal herb Salvia sclarea, which is native to Italy, Southern France, and Syria, Clary Sage Oil gets its name from the Latin word “clarus,” which means “clarifying” or “cleansing.” Historically, the seeds of this plant were believed to be beneficial for eye health and improve vision, which is why this plant got the name which means “clear eyes” or “bright eyes”.

Although mostly used in food flavorings, beverages, and fragrances, Clary Sage Essential Oil has found its way into natural cosmetics for its ability to soothe the skin. In medicinal applications, this oil is known to be able to overcome complaints related to female hormones, such as nervous tension and negative emotions, giving it another nickname: "Women's Oil". Traditionally used to flavor Muscatel Wine, this sweet herbal extract has also received the name Muscatel Oil[4,5].
