BOTANICAL OVERVIEW:

Clausena excavate is a plant species from the Rutaceae family that is widespread in Southeast Asia and South Asia. This plant is generally found in primary and secondary rainforests, growing at altitudes of up to 1,500 meters above sea level. Its natural habitat includes countries such as India, Myanmar, southern China, Taiwan, southern Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Brunei to Papua New Guinea.

Botanically, Clausena excavata is a shrub or small tree that can reach a height of up to 15 meters. This plant has pinnate compound leaves with 7 to 20 pairs of alternately arranged leaflets. The leaflets are oval to lanceolate, 2 to 20 cm long and 1 to 7 cm wide, and have an asymmetrical base. The flowers are small, pale yellow or greenish, and arranged in panicles 10 to 45 cm long that appear at the tips of branches or leaf axils. The fruit is a smooth ellipsoid, 0.8 to 2 cm in size, which changes color from green when young to white or pink when ripe, and emits a sour citrus aroma when crushed.

The morphology of Clausena excavata is characterized by abundant branching and stems covered with fine hairs. The leaves emit a strong aroma such as resin, lime, and ivy when crushed.
