BOTANICAL
AT A GLANCE:
The
word 'clove' comes from the Latin clavus which means nail, because the stem and
head of the clove bud resemble ancient nails. Cloves were one of the most
valuable spices in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries[3]. The clove tree is
a perennial plant that grows to about 8 to 12 meters (25-40 feet) tall. Its
gland-dotted leaves are small, simple, and opposite. The tree is usually
propagated from seeds planted in the shade. Flowering begins around the fifth
year; a single tree can annually produce up to 34 kg (75 pounds) of dry shoots.
The shoots are picked by hand in late summer and again in winter and then dried
in the sun. Cloves vary in length from about 13 to 19 mm (0.5-0.75 in). The
clove plant is one of the plantation crops that can be used to produce
essential oil which is useful as a raw material in the pharmaceutical and food
industries, and its most common use is as a raw material for cigarettes [4].
HISTORY:
As
early as 200 BC, envoys from Java to the court of the Han Dynasty in China
brought cloves which were usually placed in the mouth to scent the breath when
meeting the emperor. Since 22 BC, cloves have been used as a spice, including
in China when they were used in religious ceremonies, namely by placing them in
corpse coffins. Likewise, officers who wanted to appear before the emperor were
required to chew cloves, while in Persia cloves were used as a symbol of love.
Then it developed again and since 1980 cloves have been used as a spice, namely
as a mixture for tobacco and spices [3]. During the late Middle Ages, cloves
were used in Europe to preserve, flavor, and garnish food. Clove cultivation
was almost entirely limited to Indonesia, and in the early 17th century the
Dutch eradicated cloves on all islands except Amboina and Ternate to create a
shortage and maintain high prices. In the second half of the 18th century the
French smuggled cloves from the East Indies to the islands of the Indian Ocean
and the New World, breaking the Dutch monopoly. The use of clove oil to this
day still exists because the oil has many uses in various fields [5].
