BOTANICAL AT A GLANCE:

Coriander with the scientific name C. sativum L. (family Umbelliferae/Apiaceae) is an upright annual herbaceous plant with a prominent taproot and slender branching stems 20–70 cm high. There are two types of C. Sativum, namely vulgare and microcarpum; the former has larger fruit (3–5 mm diameter) with an EO yield of 0.1%–0.35% (v/w) while the latter has smaller fruit (1.5–3 mm diameter) with an EO yield of 0 .8%–1.8% (v/w).

Coriander leaves are lanceolate, green or dark green, hairless on both surfaces and vary in shape and are hollow. The flowers are small umbels, white or light pink, asymmetrical, with petals pointing away from the center. Coriander seeds are round, almost ovoid, dry schizocarps with two pepperrps and several elongated ridges on the surface that have a sweet, slightly spicy, citrus-like taste with a hint of sage[3].

HISTORY:

Coriander (C. sativum L.), which belongs to the Umbelliferae/Apiaceae family, is a glabrous aromatic annual herb, which has a long history as a culinary herb and as a source of aroma compounds. Coriander is called "kusthumbari" or "dhanayaka" in Sanskrit literature; in Hindi it is called Dhania, while Dhane is in Bengali. It is native to the eastern Mediterranean from where it may have spread to India, China, and the rest of the world. In the food industry, coriander is approved for food use by the US Food and Drug Administration, the Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association and the Council of Europe, and the plant can be used as a spice, medicine and raw material in the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries. Records of the use of coriander date back to 5000 BC, where the Romans used it to flavor bread. It was once used as an aromatic and carminative, but its only modern use in medicine is to mask the unpleasant taste and odor of medicines. This oil still continues to exist in its use in various industrial fields [4].
