BOTANICAL
OVERVIEW:
Cubeb (Piper cubeba),
also known as Javanese pepper, or tailed pepper, or chini chini / chini kabab
in Hindi is a plant in the genus Piper, cultivated for its fruit and essential
oil. Cube is known to the public as a spice or cooking seasoning which is commonly
known as Javanese pepper or Javanese chili. This plant is widely grown or
planted in Java and Sumatra. Cubeb plants grow in segments which have a
sympodial branching system. The stem is not woody and feels soft with a smooth
surface with a diameter of around 5 – 15 mm. Each stem has green adhesive
roots. The leaves of the cubeb plant are a single egg-shaped leaf with a

compound flower that has a bulbous shape measuring around 3 – 10 cm long and
the stem measures 6 – 20 cm. The fruit of the cubeb plant is round at the base,
wrinkled and rounded [3,4,5].
HISTORY:
Cubicle oil has been
used as medicine since time immemorial. Its use has been documented as early as
the 4th century BC by Aristotle's successor, Theophrastus. Cube oil was
frequently traded along trade routes to India, China, and throughout Europe[6]. Its medicinal properties have been around for
centuries. In ancient times, this oil was used in Ayurvedic medicine and
traditional Chinese medicine to treat various health problems. Additionally,
this oil was also used in Europe during the Middle Ages as a remedy for
respiratory ailments and digestive problems.
Today, cubeb essential oil is still used in alternative medicine because of its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Cubeb oil is also commonly used in aromatherapy to promote relaxation and relieve stress. In addition, cubeb essential oil is used in the perfume industry as a fragrance component, and in the food industry as a flavoring agent for certain products such as chewing gum and candy[7].
