BOTANICAL OVERVIEW:
The black cumin plant, also known as Black
Seed, is a herbal plant that flowers every year. Black cumin is included in the
Ranunculaceae family which originates from the Mediterranean and West Asia. The
cumin plant itself can reach a height of around 20 – 50 cm. The stem of this
plant is upright, woody and has a round, piercing shape. The flowers found in
black cumin plants have regular shapes with flower colors including pale blue
and even almost white, pink, light purple and yellow. Black cumin has leaves
that are pointed, branched and striped. Leaf length can reach 2.5 – 5.0 cm. The
black cumin plant has fruit that is tubular or bracket-shaped and has an
elliptical shape. Black cumin seeds are inside the fruit. When it is ripe, the
fruit will open and the seeds will be exposed to air so that they will change
color to black [3,4,5].
HISTORY:
Black seeds have been cultivated in ancient
Egypt and Persia since BC. The oldest records of their cultivation and use of
seeds date back thousands of years. They are used for health maintenance and
disease treatment. It is also mentioned in the Old Testament and was also found
in Tut's tomb Ankamen. The Islamic Prophet Mohammad is reported to have said,
"The medicine that cures all diseases except death."
The ancient Egyptians used it for
inflammation and digestion initially. These same promising benefits are noted
in other areas. A Persian doctor praised black seed's use in human medicine,
noting that it can be used as an antifungal and anti-inflammatory ointment.
Black seed is used in Ayurvedic medicine to increase longevity and metabolism.
Persian philosopher and scientist Avicenna featured in the book "The Canon of Medicine" as a way to stimulate internal energy and help recover from physical and mental fatigue and illness. Black seeds or kalonji oil were also found in the burial chamber of King Tutankhamun in Egypt which was around 3,300 years old[5].
