DESCRIPTION:
Cumin oil is known
since Biblical times, the Egyptians used Cumin mainly for its digestive
properties and for headaches. Our White Cumin Seed Oil is obtained from
extraction using steam distillation of dry cumin seeds. The oil produced is a
light yellow to brownish yellow liquid, the resulting aroma is typical of cumin
which is stringy, strong, spicy and has a herbal aroma [1].
The main ingredients
in cumin oil include cuminal, β-pinene, β-myrcene, ρ-cymene, γ-terpinene, and
ρ-mentha-1,4-dien-7-ol. Cumin has many nutraceutical properties with many
biological activities such as antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, and
antispoilage[2].
BOTANICAL AT A
GLANCE:
Cumin is a small
annual herb native to the Mediterranean area. This plant has dark green narrow
hairy leaves and small white or pink flowers, followed by small oval seeds.
Cumin can grow well in areas with cool climates, such as in northern India near
the foot of the Himalayas, but it is also found in abundance in Mexico and
Thailand.
In Indonesia, although
it can grow, in general it is not good. The cumin plant is a herbaceous plant
with a height of 1.5-5 meters. Stems striped and hairless. Ribbon-shaped, 3-10
cm long. Umbrella-shaped flowers, flower corolla 1 mm long, white or red. Fruit
length 5 mm-7, and width 3 mm. This plant has a woody stem and the leaves are
circular and stacked. White cumin leaves have leaf midribs like small twigs.
The shape of cumin leaves is not in the form of sheets, but more like short,
stiff threads. The dominant color of this plant is green and the flowers are
small, dark yellow, supported by rather long stalks [1,3,4].
HISTORY:
The history of cumin
as a spice dates back to 5000 BC, with the ancient ingredient being found in
the pyramids of Egypt. Since then, the herb has been cultivated commercially
throughout the Mediterranean, as well as India, Turkey and Central America. The
history of this plant can be traced back to ancient Egypt and Assyria. This oil
was used by the Pharaohs to aid digestion especially after large feasts. In
Türkiye, cumin was found in Hittite bottles from the 2nd millennium BC. Islamic
doctors prescribed cumin seeds for various respiratory problems.
Cumin seed oil has a
pale yellow color, with a very strong and diffuse aroma. It smells nutty and
slightly fatty, although it retains a unique "creamy" quality that
sets it apart from other similar oils. Cumin Seed Oil can also introduce spicy green
notes to natural perfumes, making it very popular in floral and aldehyde
fragrances. In flavor applications, Cumin Oil provides spicy and herbaceous
overtones, often used in meat sauces, pickle brines, and curry seasonings[5,6].
