BOTANICAL AT A
GLANCE:
Ebony (Diospyros
celebica Bakh) is one of the endemic plant species found living in groups on
the island of Sulawesi. In Indonesia, it is only found growing naturally on
Sulawesi Island, which is part of the Wallacea region. Sulawesi ebony or
Indonesian Ebony (Diospyros celebica) is a tree plant from the Ebenaceae Family
(ebony-ebony) that grows up to 40 meters. The cylindrical stem, which can be
unbranched, is 10 - 26 meters long and 150 cm in diameter, has supports
reaching 4 meters. This tree produces very high quality wood which is usually
exported. Edible fruit is sometimes collected from the wild for local use[2,3].
HISTORY:
The black wood that
grows in abundance in Sulawesi leaves behind interesting legends or stories
about ancient beliefs and traditions. For example, the black color of this wood
is related to the battle in the Ramayana story. As well as the Muria tribe which
is closely related to this magical wood. Until now, many people still believe
this story. Even ebony was used as a talisman for protection. It is not
surprising that some people use black wood accessories for their protection.
Historically, ebony
wood was first discovered and used as a carving board in ancient Egyptian
tombs. Entering the 16th century, ebony wood was widely used to make various
different cupboards because it had an exotic color and could increase the
selling value. Its development to date has made it into various solutions, one
of which is for medicine and perfumery [2].
