fennel seed oil has a high total phenolic content, thus providing strong
antioxidant properties. These antioxidant properties may contribute to wound
healing and allow the oil to fight free radicals in the body.
Free radicals are
toxins that can cause cell damage through oxidation if left untreated – the
antioxidants in fennel oil fight these free radicals and help preserve cells.

or anxiety[3].

BOTANICAL AT A
GLANCE:
Fennel (Foeniculum
vulgare Mill.) originates from the Mediterranean region, the seeds were carried
by Roman soldiers and devout pilgrims during long journeys. Where this plant is
found as two subspecies. The subspecies piperitum (pepper or Bulgarian fennel)
grows wild in dry, rocky soil, while the subspecies vulgare (garden fennel) is
mostly cultivated throughout Europe and other temperate zones as a two-year
plant, and is also found in the wild. The Latin genus name Foeniculum is
derived from the Latin "fenum" (= hay), which is used here in the
diminutive form.
This spicy fennel has
a bright green color and stands upright, reaching 0.5 meters to 2 meters. The
leaves of this plant are shaped like ribbons with a length of about 40 cm with
the final segments of the leaves shaped like hair with a width of 0.5 mm. The
flowers of spicy fennel are deep yellow[4,5,6].
HISTORY:
This plant originates
from the Middle East and warm regions of Europe and has been known, used and
cultivated since ancient Greek times. Fennel Oil is extracted via steam
distillation from the seeds of Foeniculum vulgare, commonly known as fennel.
Fennel is a well-known and important medicinal and aromatic plant belonging to
the Apiaceae family, widely known as the celery, carrot or parsley family.
Fennel is considered native to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. However,
the plant is naturalized in many parts of the world, including northern Europe,
the United States, southern Canada, and much of Asia and Australia. Fennel is
popularly used as a carminative, digestive, and diuretic as well as in treating
respiratory and digestive disorders.

is quite rich and interesting. The ancient Egyptians used this flowering plant
as food and medicine, while the ancient Chinese thought this plant could be
used as a medicine for snake bites. The ancient Greeks and Romans also used it
