BOTANICAL AT A
GLANCE:
Frankincense trees
have medium to large sizes with a diameter of between 20-30 cm and a height of
20 to 30 meters. It has straight stems with few branches and reddish bark.
Frankincense has single leaves that are spirally arranged and oval in shape,
round and elongated with tapered leaf tips. Frankincense fruit is round and
oval in shape and is quite small in size. The brown seeds are encased in thick,
hard flesh. The place where this incense plant grows varies, from the lowlands
to the highlands at an altitude of 60 to 2100 meters above sea level. Frankincense
plants do not require special requirements for soil type. Can grow on Podzolic,
Andosol, Latosol, Regosol, and various other associations ranging from heavy to
light textured soil and less fertile to fertile soil. This type of plant grows
in soil that has high porosity so it easily absorbs water [5].
HISTORY:
Frankincense has been
traded in the Arabian Peninsula and North Africa for more than 5,000 years. A
mural depicting sacks of frankincense traded from Punt adorns the wall of the
ancient Egyptian temple of Queen Hatshepsut, who died around 1458 BC.
Barus, which since
early centuries (since around the 5th century), has been visited by
intercontinental sailing boats as an exporting port for incense and camphor
(camphor). Through stories passed down from generation to generation, the
people of Tapanuli believe that incense was brought from Barus Harbor, which
was once a large port, to the Middle East, all the way to Bethlehem.
In various regions it
is called differently, namely Kemenjen in Pakpak Dairi language, Keminjen in
Karo language and Menyan in Javanese. According to historical records, one of
the centers of Frankincense trade in this region in the past was Barus Beach (Fansyur),
an important port at that time on the west coast of the island of Sumatra.
Sporadically in
several books written by Heyne, it is stated that Middle Eastern sailors saw
and said that Frankincense plants grew well at an altitude of 900 - 1200 meters
above sea level, while Pinyopusarerk said that Laotian Frankincense grew well
at 800 - 1600 meters above sea level. China and India since the first century
have brought Barus Lime and Frankincense from Tapanuli.
The name of this tree
comes from the term “franc ences”, which is French for “high quality incense”.
“Franc” is known to mean “pure” while “encens” comes from a word meaning “to
burn.” Therefore, this incense is considered “pure incense” and is the most sought
after among all other types of incense. Its strong aroma can be described as
woody, earthy, and spicy with fruity overtones. For some people, the aroma is
comparable to licorice.
The history of the use
of Frankincense has its roots in the Middle Ages and is closely related to
burning in holy places and religious rituals, as Frankincense is valued for its
strong aroma and the white smoke it emits when burned. It was also used in perfumes,
cosmetics such as eyeliner, ointments, and Egyptian mummification methods.
Today, Frankincense is still used daily in many cultures, namely Somali,
Ethiopian, Arabic and Indian cultures. Its fragrance is believed to clean the
house and purify clothes. In Ayurvedic medicine, Frankincense, known as
“dhoop,” is traditionally used for a variety of purposes, including supporting
overall well-being and purifying the air.
