BOTANICAL AT A GLANCE:

Galangal grows in the tropical climate of East Asia. Galangal is a shrub with long, thin leaves, iris-like flowers, and reddish-brown rhizomes. Galangal is a member of the ginger family. Galangal roots are aromatic and have a sweet and spicy taste.

Galangal (A. galanga) is a perennial herbaceous plant, has dark green false stems. The true stem is white, contained within the pseudostem, covered by green leaf midribs. Galangal stems reach a height of 1 m, the leaves are lanceolate with a length of 25-35 cm. Galangal is a tropical East Asian shrub with spear-like leaves, iris-like flowers, and reddish-brown woody rhizomes. It grows mainly in the Eastern Himalayas and Southwestern India, and was introduced to Europe in the 9th century[3,4].

HISTORY:

In the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, galangal was used by the Turks to make tea and the Arabs used it as a horse stimulant. In ancient times, this plant was widely used also for its aphrodisiac effect and for its relaxing action thanks to its aromatic qualities.

The Latin name Alpinia was given to the plant by Linnaeus to commemorate Prospero Alpini, an Italian botanist who lived between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, who cataloged and described many. The word galangal is a distortion of the Arabic word Khalanjan which in turn comes from the Chinese term Liangtiang (sweet ginger).

The root has been used as a spice and for its health-supporting properties in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. Galangal root is generally combined into herbal formulations and tea mixtures. In South Asian and Ayurvedic medicine, galangal has been used for centuries as a natural remedy to treat skin conditions including reducing acne, reducing blemishes, increasing skin elasticity, reducing wrinkles and treating sunburn[5,6].
