DESCRIPTION:
Garlic essential oil,
also known by its botanical name Allium sativum which is a strong yellow oil
comes from the Central Asian region.
Garlic (Allium sativum L.), the underground tuber of the Allium plant in
the Liliaceae family, is a common and popular spice that has historically been
used to prevent and treat various diseases such as pain, deafness, diarrhea,
tumors, etc.
Our garlic essential
oil is obtained from the extraction of garlic seeds using the steam
distillation method. The oil produced is a colorless to yellow liquid with a
strong characteristic garlic aroma.
This oil contains
organosulfur compounds, such as the most representative diallyl disulfide
(DADS) and diallyl trisulfide (DATS), which have attracted great interest in
the fields of medicine, food and agriculture due to their rich biological
activities. Garlic oil has been an important ingredient in alternative medicine
for centuries[1,2,3].
BOTANICAL AT A
GLANCE:
Garlic (Allium sativum
L.) comes from mountainous areas in Asia like shallots. Garlic is known as a
sterile species, meaning it can only be propagated vegetatively through
planting tubers.
The word garlic comes
from the Old English garlēac, meaning gar (spear) and leek, as 'spear-shaped
leek'. Identification of garlic's wild progenitors is difficult due to the
sterility of many of its cultivars, which limits the ability of test crosses
with wild relatives. Genetically and morphologically, garlic is most similar to
the wild species Allium longicuspis, which grows in central and southwest Asia.
Garlic can be classified into 4 groups, namely sativum, ophioscorodon,
longicuspis, and subtropical[4,5].
HISTORY:
The first recorded use
of garlic was around 2700 BC, historians debate whether garlic first appeared
in the traditional healing systems of the Sumerians or China. Whatever it was,
it wasn't long before the medicinal use of garlic spread throughout Ancient
Egypt, Israel, Greece, and Rome.
Ancient Egyptians
would prescribe garlic for a variety of ailments including abnormal growths,
parasites, circulatory problems, and insect infestations. This use is recorded
in the Codex Ebers (1500 BC) and includes 22 different treatments.
Ancient Egyptians
would also use garlic to pay pyramid workers because they believed it led to
increased strength and stamina. Garlic cloves were even found in Tutankhamun's
tomb after it was discovered.
Nepalese, Middle Eastern and eastern Asian people to treat tuberculosis, bronchitis, rheumatism, fever, flatulence, colic, liver problems, worms, hypertension and digestive problems. Garlic oil has survived throughout medical history because of its potency to this day[6,7].
