aromatic leaves of a number of Pelargonium cultivars that grow primarily in
Reunion, China, and Algeria. The essential oils of geranium species have been
attributed a number of biological properties including antibacterial,
antifungal, and also several other pharmacological properties such as
anti-inflammatory, spasmolytic, and hypoglycemic effects. Due to its gentle
floral aroma, geranium essential oil benefits the mind in powerful ways, and is
often associated with evoking feelings of calm and relaxation[1,2,3].
BOTANICAL OVERVIEW:
Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) is a
member of the botanical family Geraniaceae. Geranium originally comes from
South Africa but is now widely cultivated in Europe, Central America, Egypt,
Russia, Japan and the Congo. "Official description" Geranium is a
perennial shrub that grows three feet tall; it has small pink flowers and
serrated, pointed leaves. There are more than 700 cultivated varieties of
geranium and pelargonium plants; widely planted for ornamental purposes in
gardens and developed into essential oils[4,5,6].
HISTORY:
Since ancient Egyptian times, Geranium Oil
has been used in a variety of applications including clear, smooth, radiant
skin, hormone balancing, alleviation of anxiety and fatigue, and improvement of
mood. Geranium botany was introduced to Europe in the late 17th century, its
fresh leaves were used in finger bowls.
Traditionally, Geranium Essential Oil has
been used as an insect repellent and also to flavor foods, soft drinks, and
alcoholic beverages. Although this perennial shrub originates from South
Africa, Geranium plants are now cultivated throughout the world, namely in
Central America, Europe, Congo, Egypt, Russia and Japan.
The most commonly cultivated Geranium
species for the extraction of its sweet-smelling essential oil is Pelargonium
graveolens. Depending on the country of origin of a particular Geranium
variety, Geranium Essential Oil may exhibit different properties.
Geranium oil is widely used as an important floral component in perfumes, cosmetics, and household items that require fragrance. It is a major component in the soap industry, and is also used in pharmaceuticals, herbal medicine and aromatherapy[4,7,8,9].
