BOTANY AT A GLANCE:

Ginger originates from India and was brought by Arab traders to Rome and Greece. Ginger or the rhizome of Zingiber officinale, consists of seven species that are widespread in Asia. Ginger is a false-stemmed plant, 30 cm to 1 m tall, upright, unbranched, composed of leaf sheaths, round in shape, pale green in color and the base of the stem reddish.

Ginger roots are round, slender, fibrous, white to light brown in color. This plant has compound flowers in the form of panicles appearing on the ground surface, narrow stick or egg-shaped, and very sharp.

Based on the size and color of the rhizome, ordinary ginger is divided into three varieties: giant ginger or white ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc. var. officinale), small white ginger or rhizome emprit ginger (Zingiber. officinale var. amarum), and red ginger (Zingiber officinale var. rubrum).

The Zingiberaceae family is found throughout tropical and sub-tropical areas, consisting of 47 genera and 1,400 species. The Zingiber genus includes 80 species, one of which is ginger, which is the most important species and has the most benefits. Emprit ginger plants are easy to grow and have been widely cultivated in Indonesia [3,4,5].

HISTORY:

Zingiberaceae rhizomes have been used in traditional medicinal practices in three ethnic groups; Dayak Linoh, Malay, and Javanese, from Sintang Regency, West Kalimantan, Indonesia for several generations.  Traditionally, ginger is mostly used by grinding and boiling it and used as a traditional medicine by drinking it. Ginger has a distinctive thick and pungent aroma. Ginger has spread to other regions throughout the world, including Europe and America.

In Europe, the first discoverer of this plant was the Venetian merchant, Marco Polo, in 1285. After that, ginger became a staple commodity in Europe, Venetian traders built businesses in Constantinople and Sudak, located on the shores of the Red Sea, to monopolize the ginger trade. brought by caravans from the Silk Road.

Venice's monopoly on the ginger trade continued until the 15th century but began to break down when Portuguese sailors were able to sail directly to Calicut, India, to obtain ginger. Another prominent figure involved in the ginger trade was Francisco Mendoza who brought ginger to South America to be cultivated and then exported to Spain as early as 1547.

The history of ginger use is geographically and culturally extensive and is considered one of the oldest and most important aromatic plants. Ginger was highly valued by the ancient Greeks and Romans who obtained it from Arab traders via the Red Sea. Red ginger has high popularity in society, supported by ethnopharmacological studies, it is estimated to have bioactivity in this subspecies [6,7,8,9].
