DESCRIPTION:

Grapefruit (Citrus Paradisi) essential oil is most often used in aromatherapy as a concentration enhancer because it contains a sharp, juicy aroma that is thought to awaken the mind and increase energy.

Our Grapefruit Oil is obtained from the extraction of grapefruit peel via the steam distillation method. The resulting oil is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a characteristic fresh and sweet grapefruit aroma. This oil provides an inhibitory effect against bacteria and fungi, and can be further developed for the treatment of certain diseases. Grapefruit EO has demonstrated antioxidant activity, which is important for food preservation and disease prevention[1,2].

BOTANICAL AT A GLANCE:

Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi), is a citrus tree from the Rutaceae family and its fruit is edible. This fruit became famous as a fruit for household consumption in the West Indies islands before its culture spread to the American mainland. Grapefruit has become popular as a breakfast fruit in many parts of the world, and production has expanded to most citrus-producing countries, especially the United States, Israel, Cyprus, South Africa, and Brazil.

Grapefruit trees grow as big and strong as orange trees; mature trees may be 4.5 to 6 meters (15 to 20 feet) tall. The foliage is very dense, with shiny dark green leaves and almost glabrous (without plant hairs). The flowers are large and white, growing singly or in groups in the leaf axils. Most varieties are yellow when ripe. Fruit ranges from 100 to 150 mm (4 to 6 inches) in diameter, the size depending on the variety and growing conditions. The flesh is usually light yellowish, tender, and very full of juice, with a distinctive sour taste[3,4].

HISTORY:

Grapefruit comes from a natural hybrid. One of the ancestors of the grapefruit is the Jamaican sweet orange (Citrus sinensis), which is an ancient hybrid of Asian origin; the other is the Indonesian pomelo (C. maxima). Both C. sinensis and C. maxima were present in the West Indies in 1692.

Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) is thought to have originated in Barbados as a hybridization of Jamaican sweet oranges and Indonesian pomelos, which were introduced from Asia in the 17th century. Grapefruit trees have a vigorous appearance, growing to about 5 to 14 meters tall with dark, dense foliage.

The first grapefruit nurseries in the US were established in the late 19th century and by the mid-20th century, commercial production of grapefruit was expanding rapidly in several parts of the world including the US, Jamaica and Trinidad, Mexico, parts of South America, Israel, Morocco, and Cyprus.

Grapefruit has a long history of use in traditional medicine throughout the world and is traditionally used as an antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, astringent and preservative. Today, the well-known benefits of Grapefruit Essential Oil can be traced back to this widespread traditional use.

Since its introduction to the commercial market, grapefruit oil has been widely used as a flavoring agent in foods and beverages and as a fragrance ingredient in soaps, detergents, and personal care products. Grapefruit comes in white, pink, and red varieties, all of which produce essential oils with similar properties[5,6].
