cosmetics, perfumery and aromatherapy industries.
This oil is often referred to as camellia
oil or tea seed oil. Green tea seed oil consists of fatty acids such as oleic
acid, linoleic acid, and palmitic acid. Green tea oil can be added to soap,
shampoo, hair conditioner, lotion, perfume, and massage oil, due to its
anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and astringent properties[1,2].
BOTANICAL AT A GLANCE:
Tea (C. sinensis L.) is an annual plant
that is widely distributed in Southeast Asia, India, South China, Laos, North
Thailand and Burma. The C. Sinensis L. plant has two varieties, namely C.
sinensis var. sinensis and C. sinensis var. assamica. Tea (Camellia sinensis)
is a plant that has herbal medicinal properties. The tea plant has the
characteristics of an upright, woody stem, branched branches, twig tips and
young leaves with fine hair. The tea plant has single leaves, short stems,
alternately located, the leaf blades are stiff like thin skin, 6-18 cm long,
2-6 cm wide, green in color, and have a shiny surface. Good tea is produced
from the shoots (peko) plus 2-3 young leaves, because the young leaves are rich
in polyphenolic compounds, caffeine and amino acids [3,4,5].
HISTORY:
References to green
tea in Chinese literature date back 5000 years. Legend has it that tea was
first discovered by Emperor Shen Nung. He rested under a tree while his
servants prepared water over the fire. The wind picks up and blows the leaves
from the trees into the warm water. The Emperor decided to try the liquor and
immediately felt refreshed. The tree he was sitting under, was a tea tree.
Since then tea drinks
have developed rapidly and tea is now the most popular drink.
Green tea spread from
China to Japan in the 800s. A Buddhist monk who returned to Japan, brought with
him the seeds of the Camellia Sinensis plant. The Japanese then developed their
famous teas such as Sencha, Matcha, and Bancha.
Finally, in the 1600s,
tea was brought to Europe, when The Dutch East India Company was formed and
established trade relations with China. In the 1700s, England imported more
than 100,000 pounds of tea per year. Thomas Twining proudly opened England's first
teahouse in 1717.
This tea oil was
investigated by Pieter Van Rombhurg, a Dutchman who worked at the Royal Garden
Buitenzorg, now the Bogor Botanical Gardens. Rombhurg was tasked with
investigating aroma plant products that were suitable for use as industrial
commodities by the VOC.
In 1897, Rombhurg extracted thea sinensis or camellia sinensis plants which grew in the Priangan area, formerly a tea plantation owned by a Dutch entrepreneur called Preanger Planter, the resulting yield was 0.006% of the weight of the raw material. In traditional Chinese medicine, green tea oil is used to regulate cholesterol levels in the body and improve the health of the digestive system. This oil is also used to improve the immune system, prevent disease, and to treat a number of skin conditions[6,7,8].
