DESCRIPTION:
Jasmine has several
species ranging from several varieties of jasmine sambac, jasmine auriculatum,
and jasmine grandiflorum which are used industrially for the production of
essential oils.
Our jasmine oil is
obtained from the extraction of jasmine flowers using the n-Hexane solvent
extraction method. The oil produced is an orange to brownish liquid with a
strong and sweet characteristic aroma of jasmine flowers.
Jasmine flower
essential oil has been widely used as an expectorant (for dry skin),
antiseptic, antispasmodic and antidepressant. Jasmine oil is also used to cure
depression, fatigue, sensitive skin, headaches and coughs[1,2,3].
BOTANICAL AT A
GLANCE:
White jasmine or
Jasminum sambac is a species of jasmine originating from southern Asia (in
India, Myanmar and Sri Lanka). The spread started from Hindustan to Indochina,
then the Malay Archipelago. This flower is one of the three national flowers of
Indonesia (as "Puspa Bangsa"). Jasmine is a small evergreen vine or
shrub reaching 0.5–3 m (1.6–9.8 ft) in height with attractive glabrous leaves
producing attractive sweet-scented white flowers in large quantities in summer.
Jasmine stems are branched and brown. White jasmine leaves are a single type,
short petioles, about 5 mm in size, with opposite positions. Flowers are
produced in clusters of 3–12 together at the ends of branches, about 2–3 cm in
diameter with 5–9 lobes, strongly scented with a white corolla[4,5].
HISTORY:
Jasmine is known for
its calming floral aroma and is widely described with terms such as warm,
strong, intensely floral, and hypnotic, it is no surprise that this oil is most
widely used in perfumery.
Jasmine has a history
as an ingredient used by Kings for festivals, rituals and religious ceremonies
spanning many parts of the world and reaching back to ancient times. Native to
the Arabian Peninsula, tropical Africa, and Asia, Jasmine traveled the Silk
Road in trade to establish its reputation as a unique and exquisite beauty.
Various species of jasmine still have rich symbolism in many cultures and are
often used for personal adornment.
Jasmine was long
believed to be an aphrodisiac; there are many romantic associations with
jasmine flowers. They are a symbol of love and fidelity in the Philippines and
of divine hope in India, where they are often used in wedding ceremonies. It is
also common for married women in India, particularly in the South, to wear
flowers on their fingers like wedding rings. Jasmine flowers are also often
used at weddings in Indonesia, and as a beautiful accent in women's hair. Men
are also known to wear small bouquets of flowers behind their ears in Morocco
and Tunisia to enjoy their alluring scent.
It was not until the early 17th century that Jasmine reached Europe, but this was an auspicious arrival, as it later became almost synonymous with traditional French fragrance. Production of jasmine oil began around the mid-19th century in the Grasse region, once believed to be the world's largest producer. While the region still produces Jasmine Absolute, the size of production has declined drastically since its peak in the 1920s and 30s. Since then, production has grown rapidly and is now dominated by Egypt, India, and Morocco, followed by France and China[6].
