DESCRIPTION:
Our juniper essential
oil is a sweet, woody oil with light herbal top notes and a full-bodied aroma.
Juniper Berry Essential Oil is obtained by crushing, drying, or partially
drying it and then steam distilling it. Once ripe, the berries are placed in a chamber
where steam is released to encourage the release of oil. The juniper oil
produced is a pale yellow to yellow green liquid with a fresh and sweet aroma.
The aromatic properties of all parts of the Juniper tree have been used
traditionally for cleansing and incense by many cultures[1,2,3,4].
BOTANICAL AT A
GLANCE:
Juniper (Juniperus
communis L.) is an evergreen tree native to Europe, northern Asia and northern
North America. Juniper is a conifer, gymnosperm, from the Cupressaceae family
(Cypress family). The tree produces blue, purple or blackish brown fruit, which
are harvested in early autumn for culinary and medicinal purposes. The berries
take 2–3 years to ripen, changing from green to blue to black as they ripen.
Only blue, ripe berries are harvested.
In Europe, many plants
are harvested from the wild; once collected, the berries are placed in the sun
to dry and during this process they develop the blackish color seen in the
final commercial product.
Juniper berries
contain up to 2% essential oil, which consists of monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes,
phenols and phenolic esters, sugars, catechol, tannins, flavonoids,
proanthocyanidins and deoxypodophyllotoxin. The main compounds are α- and
β-pinene (16.5–80 %), sabinene (0.2–50 %), limonene (1–12 %) and terpene-4-ol
(up to 5 %); with smaller amounts of α-terpeneol, borneol, geraniol, etc. The
flavor profile of light green berries is dominated by pine[5].
HISTORY:
Juniper berries, along
with their leaves and branches, have been used for centuries for spiritual and
medicinal purposes. In ancient times, Juniper was believed to act as a
protector against evil spirits, negative forces, and disease. This is often
referred to in the Old Testament, namely in Psalm 120:4, a verse that describes
burning a cheating person with bad intentions with the embers of a broom tree,
a type of juniper bush that grows in Palestine. One of the many interpretations
of this passage views burning as a metaphor for cleansing, purifying, and
eliminating false and negative energy with Juniper.
Juniper Berry has an extensive history of medicinal use in many ancient civilizations. In ancient Egypt and Tibet, Juniper was highly revered as a medicine and as an integral part of religious incense. In 1550 BC, Juniper was discovered as an effective treatment for tapeworms on papyrus in Egypt. The plant is also important among native peoples of various cultures, having been used for the treatment of urinary tract infections, respiratory conditions, arthritis symptoms, and arthritic conditions. Native people also burn Juniper Berries to clean and purify the air[6,7].
