DESCRIPTION

Kencur (Kaempferia galanga L.) is one of five types of plants developed as native Indonesian medicinal plants. Galangal is a medicinal plant that has high economic value so it is widely cultivated. The rhizomes are used as raw materials for the traditional medicine industry, kitchen spices, food ingredients and other refreshing drinks.

Our Kaempferia oil is obtained from the extraction of galangal rhizomes using the steam distillation method. The oil produced is a pale yellow to orange liquid with a distinctive fresh and spicy kencur aroma. Kaempferia oil has been used in India, China, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Thailand as a traditional medicine to treat digestive disorders, rheumatism, toothache, asthma, hemorrhoids and wounds [1,2].

BOTANICAL AT A GLANCE:

Kaempferia galanga Linn. (Synonym Kaemferia rotunda Blanco, Kaempferia latifolia Hornem.) from the Zingiberaceae family which is commonly used as a spice and medicinal ingredient in Southeast Asia. Kaempferia galanga Linn, known in Indonesia as kencur, is an aromatic plant belonging to the Zingiberaceae family, with wide, ovate leaves and a pale green color.

K. galanga differs from other types by the absence of stems and round, dark brown rhizomes, whereas the other varieties all have pale light brown stems and rhizomes. In kencur there is also a chemical content consisting of 4 - 14% starch, 13 - 37% minerals, 0.02% essential oil. Essential oils include cineol, methyl kanil acid, and pentadecane, synodic acid, ethyl ester, borneol, camphene, paraeumarin, abscisic acid, alkaloids, and gum.

Based on the size of the leaves and rhizomes, there are 2 types of galangal known, namely broad-leaved galangal with large rhizomes and narrow-leaved galangal with smaller rhizomes. Usually kencur has broad leaves with a round or rounded shape, has large rhizomes, but the essential oil content is lower than kencur which has small, oval-shaped leaves with smaller rhizomes[3,4,5,6].

USE HISTORY:

Kencur has been an important part of Southeast Asian history and culture for thousands of years. As a member of the Zingiberaceae family, which is the same as ginger and turmeric, kencur has aromatic roots that are used for various purposes.

K. galanga is sold as an industrial plant in markets and its rhizomes have been used as a seasoning for various dishes. In traditional Chinese medicine, galangal can treat cholera, bruises, constipation and stomach aches. Meanwhile, Indian Ayurvedic formulations recommend using galangal for the treatment of muscle swelling and rheumatism. In addition, kencur has more than 59 components in Ayurvedic medicinal formulations to cure asthma, malaria, skin diseases, bronchitis, wounds and spleen disorders. Empirically, kencur is also useful as a medicine for coughs, itching in the throat, flatulence, nausea, colds, aches, tetanus and to increase appetite [3,4].
