Kapok
seed oil is extracted from the seeds of the kapok plant of the Ceiba pentandra
species grown in Indonesia. Our Kapok Carrier Oil is processed by extracting
the seeds of the kapok plant after the kapok fibers are removed using the cold
pressed method. Kapok seed oil is rich in linoleic acid, oleic acid, palmitic
acid, and stearic acid. The resulting oil is a liquid with a pale yellow to
golden yellow color with a very light and neutral aroma, and a light texture
that is easily absorbed into the skin without leaving a sticky feeling. The
levels of vitamin E and other antioxidants are effective for use in the
cosmetics and personal care industries[1,2].
BOTANICAL
OVERVIEW:
Ceiba
pentandra or kapok randu is a large tropical tree belonging to the Malvaceae
family. This tree can grow up to 30 meters in height, with a trunk diameter
that can reach 1 to 3 meters. The trunk is upright, round, and often covered
with striking conical thorns. The bark is gray-brown, giving this tree a unique
characteristic. The roots of the kapok randu tree are very strong and deep,
with large supporting roots that provide stability to this tall tree in
tropical soils. Ceiba pentandra leaves are compound leaves that have 5 to 9
elliptical or lanceolate leaflets with a pointed tip. These leaves are dark
green on the upper surface and light green on the underside. Kapok randu flowers
usually grow solitary or in small clusters in the leaf axils, with a yellowish
white or pink color, and are about 2 to 3 cm in size. Kapok fruit is an oblong
capsule with a length of 10 to 20 cm, green when young and turning brown when
ripe. When the fruit is ripe, the capsule will burst and release small seeds
wrapped in light grayish-white kapok fiber. This tree, besides being known for
its kapok fiber, also has many other benefits, including in the field of
traditional medicine[3,4,5].
HISTORY:
The history of kapok oil (Ceiba pentandra) began with
the utilization of kapok seeds which have traditionally been used by people in
various regions. In Indonesia, kapok trees began to be known and cultivated in
the early 20th century, especially in Java, during the Dutch colonial period.
At that time, kapok trees were planted to produce kapok fiber used in the
textile industry and mattress fillers, as well as for the oil obtained from the
seeds.
Kapok seed oil, known as kapoköl in German, is
obtained through the process of pressing kapok seeds. This process involves
cold pressing to extract the oil contained in the seeds. Kapok oil has a bright
yellow to golden yellow color, and tastes soft with a distinctive aroma.
Although its oil content is around 25%, this kapok oil has properties that do
not dry easily (iodine value between 85-100), but it is easily rancid if
exposed to air for too long. Due to its easily rancid nature, this oil is more
often used in non-food industries, such as making soap, lubricants, and even as
an alternative fuel.
In the period 1928 to 1936, Indonesia, especially
Java, became the main producer of kapok fiber used globally, even covering up
to 85% of the world's needs. Kapok exports became very important at that time.
However, over time, the use of kapok as a primary commodity began to decline in
the 1990s due to the decline in demand for kapok fiber and the development of
other synthetic materials.
Nevertheless, kapok seed oil still has great potential in the field of renewable energy. Research in Indonesia, such as that conducted by Serambi Mekkah University, developed biodiesel from kapok seed oil using catalysts from rice husk ash and calcium oxide (CaO), which showed that kapok oil can be used as an environmentally friendly alternative energy source. Currently, although no longer a major export commodity, kapok trees are still planted in various regions as shade plants and erosion prevention, especially in mountainous areas such as the Muria Mountains, Central Java [3,6,7,8,9,10,11,12].
