[1,2,3].

BOTANICAL AT A GLANCE:

Alpinia malaccencis or galangal malacca, also known as "Laja Gowah", or in Thailand this plant is called "Kha pa", while Vietnamese people call it "ring malacca". Taxonomically it is classified into the zingiberaceae (ginger) family. Another scientific name for this plant is Galanga malaccensis Rumph, or Catimbium malaccensis L. Biologically, Alpinia malacccencis is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical areas, such as Indonesia and Malaysia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Myanmar and Thailand.

Galangal is a shrub with long, thin leaves, iris-like flowers, and reddish-brown rhizomes. A member of the ginger family, galangal root is aromatic and has a sweet and spicy taste. Grows wild in dense and dense clusters in teak, bamboo and shrub forests. Grows well in shady places at altitudes up to 1,500 m above sea level. Laja gowah has cylindrical rhizomes, slightly reddish brown or pale greenish yellow, the color of the inner flesh is white. The root has been used as a spice and for its health-supporting properties in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda. Galangal root is generally combined into herbal formulations and tea mixtures. Galangal is a tropical East Asian shrub with spear-like leaves, iris-like flowers, and reddish-brown woody rhizomes. It grows mainly in the Eastern Himalayas and Southwestern India, and was introduced to Europe in the 9th century[4.5].

HISTORY:

The Latin name Alpinia was given to the plant by Linnaeus to commemorate Prospero Alpini, an Italian botanist who lived between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, who cataloged and described many plants and was the first to understand the sexual differences between plants. The word galangal is a distortion of the Arabic word Khalanjan which in turn comes from the Chinese term Liangtiang (sweet ginger).

It seems that smoking was being prepared in ancient Egypt, while for its introduction to Europe we have to wait for the Middle Ages, where a very popular spiced liquor appeared among the concoctions of Hippocrassis. Saint Hildegard of Bingen, famous for her studies of herbs and spices, in the tenth century, defined galangal as “the spice of life and used it in many herbal preparations to cure many ailments: from heartache and stomachache to deafness.

In the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, galangal was used by the Turks to make tea and the Arabs used it as a horse stimulant. Even today, in Russia, which has long been dominated by Turks, it is used to make vinegar and liqueurs.

What's more, in ancient times, this plant was widely used also for its aphrodisiac effect and for its relaxing action thanks to its aromatic qualities. In South Asian and Ayurvedic medicine, galangal has been used for centuries as a natural remedy to treat skin conditions including reducing acne, reducing blemishes, increasing skin elasticity, reducing wrinkles and treating sunburn[6,7].
