DESCRIPTION:
Lakawood, or laka
wood, is a reddish aromatic wood used as incense in China, India and Southeast
Asia. Laka wood oil is used for coloring and treatment. Laka oil is obtained
from the extraction of laka wood stems using the steam distillation method. In
the distillation process, the lacka roots are mixed with water and then boiled
until they evaporate. Then the steam is cooled again so that lacka root oil is
obtained. Usually substances that have a lower boiling point will evaporate
first. The oil obtained has a brownish yellow color and has a distinctive aroma
[1].
BOTANICAL AT A
GLANCE:
Generally laka trees
are found in secondary forests, in rivers, in dry hill forests, along the
coast, in freshwater swamp forests, in dipterocarp forests, in fertile yellow
soil or in alluvial soil, from sea level to a height of 150 m above sea level.
Flowering in March, April, August and October. Fertilization occurs in the same
month. This Laka root is a thorny liana plant that has a height of up to ± 30
meters, with rough skin that peels, the core of the stem is bright red to dark
red and the sapwood is whitish, the leaves are crossed with a length of 15-20
cm, the width of the leaves is 5-9 cm , lanceolate oval leaves, 5-9 cm x 2-4
cm, with a smooth leaf surface [2,3,4].
HISTORY:
In a book about plants
from 304 AD, the laka tree was described as having long, slender leaves, white
flowers and black seeds. The wood is cut and used as incense. A 9th-century
Tang poet wrote a poem on a Taoist theme referring to jiangzhenxiang lakawood:
"The reddish dew gives me an image of “life-prolonging wine", the
whitish smoke reminds me of the burning of “jiangzhenxiang” (“aromatics that
overthrow the True.” )".
Lakawood from
Southeast Asia, was first recorded in 982 (early Song Dynasty) as one of 37
foreign products that could be traded freely in China. Descriptions of laka
wood and its trade are given in records of the Sung and Yuan dynasties, Zhu Fan
Zhi and Daoyi Zhilüe.
These texts show that
Lakawood is a product from various countries on the Malay Peninsula, Singapore,
Sumatra, Java and Kalimantan. Daoyi Zhilüe also lists laka wood as a
large-scale export in Ma-li-lu (Maynila), Sulu (later the Sultanate of Sulu),
and Min-to-lang (later the Sultanate of Maguindanao) in the modern Philippines.
They suggest a significant trade in laka wood, but it was also considered a
cheap import during the Song Dynasty, so Quanzhou people both rich and poor
could afford to buy incense to burn at the end of the year as an offering.
Lambri in Sumatra is said to produce the best quality lakawood. Laka wood was also mentioned by Zhou Daguan in his book The Customs of Cambodia which described his journey in 1297. However, the value of laka wood increased during the Ming dynasty. The product is mentioned in Zheng He's voyage records such as the Yingya Shenglan by Ma Huan during the Ming dynasty, and its value was considered high enough to be offered to the imperial court as tribute by various ports in Sumatra and also Siam[1,5].
