DESCRIPTION:
Lavandula species are
flowering plants common in Europe and throughout the Mediterranean. Lavender
has many health benefits for humans. Apart from its use in herbal medicine,
this plant is widely used in the fields of cosmetics, perfume, food and aromatherapy.
Our lavender essential
oil is obtained from the extraction of Lavandula latifolia flowers using the
steam distillation method. The resulting oil is colorless and has a distinctive
lavender aroma. The most commonly used species are L. angustifolia, L.
latifolia, L. stoechas and L. x intermedia. The biological activity of lavender
oil is demonstrated by scientific or clinical evidence, including
antibacterial, antifungal, carminative, sedative, antidepressive, and effective
for burns and insect bites [1,2,3].
BOTANICAL AT A
GLANCE:
The Lavandula genus
originates from the Mediterranean region and Southern Europe and belongs to the
Lamiaceae family. Lavender is an aromatic shrub native to the low mountains
(1,970-3,940 feet) of the Mediterranean basin. The plant is cultivated in France,
Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Italy, Spain, the countries of the former
Yugoslavia (Montenegro, Serbia, etc.), China, Russia, Moldova, Argentina, the
Netherlands, Great Britain, the United States and Australia. Lavender typically
grows 1 to 3 feet (30-90 cm) tall and 1 foot (30-90 cm) wide[4,5].
HISTORY:
Although the practice
of inhaling essential oils has been around for thousands of years, the term
'aromatherapy' was only coined in the early 20th century, when French chemist
Rene-Maurice Gattefosse self-treated burns with lavender essential oil. He wasn't
the first to use lavender for its healing qualities, but the Egyptians, Romans,
and Greeks all explored lavender's calming, healing, and soothing qualities. In
fact, it is said that the Egyptians even used it around Tutankhamun's tomb, as
traces of it were found. The name 'lavender' is also said to come from the
Latin word "lavare" which means "to wash". This is because
the Romans used plants in their baths, bed sheets, and clothing.
While there is still much to be discovered about what lavender essential oil does for us, there is no doubt that it has been at the forefront of modern aromatherapy for a reason and will likely continue its powerful legacy for years to come[6].
