DISCLAIMER:
- Consult a healthcare
professional before using leech oil, especially if you are pregnant,
breastfeeding, have sensitive skin, or are taking medications (such as blood
thinners), it is important to consult a healthcare provider to ensure safety.
- Leech oil is usually
concentrated and should be diluted with a suitable carrier oil (such as olive
oil or coconut oil) to reduce the risk of irritation or adverse reactions.
Direct application without dilution may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions
in some individuals.
- Always do a patch
test on a small area of skin before using leech oil more widely. This helps
identify allergic reactions or sensitivities to the oil.
- Avoid applying leech
oil to open wounds or broken skin unless directed by a healthcare provider.
- Stop use immediately if you experience discomfort, redness, swelling, or a more severe allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, and seek medical attention.
- Leech oil contains bioactive compounds such as hirudin (anticoagulant) which can affect blood circulation. Therefore, it is important to use it with caution, especially for those with underlying health conditions.
USES AND
BENEFITS:
• Hirudomedicis leech
oil has medicinal uses because it has anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory and
circulatory stimulation properties.
• The hirudin compound
produced by leech saliva plays a role in inhibiting blood clotting, making it
useful in therapies involving blood flow and wound healing. In addition, this
compound can increase skin regeneration and reduce the appearance of fine lines
and wrinkles.
• The
anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of leech oil can help reduce
redness and swelling associated with acne.
• The
anti-inflammatory properties of leech oil derived from compounds such as eglin
and antistasin can reduce swelling, pain and inflammation.
• Leech oil can aid detoxification, aiding the removal of toxins from the body through increased circulation.
• There are limited studies reporting the use of leeches for men's sexual health but the efficacy and safety of zootherapy cannot be determined so further testing in vitro and in vivo is needed[9,10,11,12,13,14,15].
THERAPEUTIC
BENEFITS:
Its therapeutic
benefits are anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-coagulant, detoxifying
antioxidant, pain reliever [9,10,11,12,13,14,15].

Leech oil is often
produced from various species of medicinal leeches. Our leech oil is obtained
from the extraction of the H. medicianalis type leech using the maceration
method using VCO vegetable oil. The oil produced is a slightly thick, blackish
brown liquid. This oil has a distinctive natural aroma, does not smell rancid,
does not smell like mud, and does not smell bad so that its use is very
comfortable and does not cause itching and does not cause irritation to the
skin.
Leech oil is a natural
oil known for its therapeutic and cosmetic uses due to its content of fatty
acids, proteins and other bioactive compounds. Traditionally leech oil has been
used in Southeast Asia to increase circulation, reduce inflammation, and improve
skin health[1,2].
MORPHOLOGY:
More than 700 species
of leeches have been described covering a diversity of morphologies,
physiology, and behaviors that occur in terrestrial and aquatic habitats,
including freshwater, estuarine, and marine ecosystems. One species of leech is
the medicinal leech (Hirudomedicis). The morphology of Hirudomedicis (medicinal
leech) has an elongated, segmented and cylindrical body. It has two suckers: an
anterior sucker for feeding and a posterior sucker for attaching. The body is
divided into several segments, and the dorsal surface is slightly curved. The
mouth contains a set of sharp teeth that are used to pierce the host's skin and
suck blood. Leech skin is very sensitive, allowing it to detect environmental
changes, aiding host identification and movement[3,4,5].
HISTORY:
The use of leeches for
treatment dates back to ancient Egypt around 1300 BC. The Greek physician Galen
(130 to 201 AD) used to use leeches to bleed, this leech therapy is also known
as hirudotherapy. In the 19th century the use of leeches for bleeding became
widespread, causing a shortage of leeches from 1825 to 1850 in France,
necessitating the import of leeches from America.
In Ayurvedic medicine
leech therapy is used for conditions such as arthritis and skin diseases,
taking advantage of the anti-inflammatory and anticoagulant properties of leech
saliva. By the end of the 19th century, the medicinal use of leeches had lost popularity
due to the adoption of modern concepts of pathology and microbiology. Extracts
from leeches have been marketed in cream form for topical application.
Topical use in
Ayurveda which is one of the oldest traditional systems originating from the
Indian subcontinent more than 5000 years ago. Leech-based products were popular
for hair care in Roman and Egyptian civilizations. The beauty queen, Cleopatra,
is said to have used leech therapy to treat her hair. The development of leech
oil, which is extracted from medicinal leeches such as Hirudomedicis, utilizes
bioactive compounds found in leech saliva, one of the compounds is hirudin
which is an anticoagulant, as well as compounds with anti-inflammatory,
analgesic and antimicrobial properties. Leech oil has been used in modern times
for its therapeutic effects, especially in improving blood circulation and
accelerating wound healing[6,7,8].
