BOTANICAL AT A GLANCE:

Lemon is a plant native to Southeast Asia. Lemons were first grown in India, Northern Burma and China. In 1493, Christopher Columbus brought Citrus limon seeds to Hispaniola. Citrus limon was first cultivated in Genoa in the mid-15th century. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Citrus limon was grown in Florida and California. Lemons are cultivated in Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Brazil, the United States and other countries around the Mediterranean Sea. The parts of the Citrus limon plant that are often used are the fruit peel, flowers, leaves and juice. Lemons are a type of herbaceous plant that has many branches and twigs with a maximum height of 10 to 15 feet (3 to 6 m). Citrus limon has thorny stems, green and oval leaves, oval-shaped flowers and white with purple stripes inside. Lemons measure 7 to 12cm and are oval in shape with a sharp tip at one end[4,5,9].

HISTORY:

Because of its yellow color, refreshing aroma, purifying abilities, and burst of energy, Lemon essential oil has earned the nickname “Liquid Sunshine.” Lemon Oil has the strongest anti-microbial activity of all essential oils. The name Lemon comes from the Arabic word "laimun" or the Persian word "limun", both meaning small, evergreen "citrus fruit", the Lemon tree is considered to be a cross between Bitter Orange and Citron and was originally grown for decorative purposes with the fruit remaining on the tree . Once the fruit resource was discovered, it began to be cultivated.

The lemon tree originates from Asia and was used not only by ancient Indians but also Egyptians and Romans to treat infectious diseases. Lemon trees are believed to have been brought to Europe in the Middle Ages around 200 AD and eventually spread from the Middle East to North Africa and eventually, Christopher Columbus introduced them to the Americas.

Today, because of its antiseptic and anti-bacterial properties, British sailors in the Royal Navy often use it while sailing to protect themselves from scurvy and vitamin deficiencies.

Fruits and essential oils have been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years to treat a wide variety of health problems. Lemon Essential Oil is used today in perfumery, culinary practices, and to relieve mental fatigue while improving cognitive function and concentration. For this reason, Lemon Oil is diffused in the workplace to increase employee focus and efficiency and reduce the number of errors[6].
