Our lime oil is obtained from the extraction of Citrus Aurantifolia peels via the steam distillation method. The resulting oil is a colorless to pale green liquid with a distinctive lime aroma that is fresh, appetizing and zesty.

Lime Essential Oil is commonly used in aromatherapy. The health benefits, when added to a mixture of other essential oils include helping maintain healthy skin, helping reduce excess oil from the skin, and improving the appearance of dark spots[1,2,3].

BOTANICAL AT A GLANCE:

Lime (Citrus aurantifolia) is a plant that originates from Asia and grows abundantly in tropical climates. This plant is a poly embryonic species cultivated throughout the world, mostly in hot subtropical or tropical areas, such as southern Florida, India, Mexico, Egypt, and the West Indies. Lime is a type of Geruk citrus.

Lime is a type of shrub that has lots of branches and twigs. Height is about 0.5-3.5 m. The tree trunk is tenacious, thorny and hard. Meanwhile, the outer surface of the skin is old and dull. The leaves are compound, elliptical in shape with a rounded base, blunt tip and serrated edges. The leaves reach 2.5-9 cm in length and 2-5 cm in width. Meanwhile, the leaves are pinnate with winged stems, green and 5-25 mm wide. The flowers are compound/single in size and grow in the leaf axils or at the end of the stem with a diameter of 1.5-2.5 cm. The flower petals are shaped like 4-5 bowls with a diameter of 0.4-0.7 cm, yellowish white in color and the cylindrical pistil stem is yellowish white. The crown leaves are 4-5 in number, oval or lanceolate with a length of 0.7-1.25 cm and a width of 0.25-0.5 cm, white [4,5,6,7].

HISTORY:

Limes are one of the earliest citrus fruits that spread to other parts of the world around 3000 years ago. Lime then spread to the Middle East and the Mediterranean region through the spice and incense trade routes around 1200 years ago.

Generally, limes are universally sold while still green, the fruit turns yellow when ripe. Lime trees are medium-sized evergreen trees growing on rootstocks. Lime trees produce fruit in a 3 month cycle; hence it is common to find its flowers, buds, and strongly scented fruit all on the same tree.

In aromatherapy, diluted lime oil has its uses in topical applications as well as when ingested. In natural perfumery, lime oil is the top note in eau de cologne, chypres, or florals. It was also used to treat scurvy among British naval soldiers, which was later discovered to be the result of its high vitamin C content.

While the oil extraction methods and composition may differ slightly, their uses are largely similar. Lime essential oil generally contains cleansing properties that help brighten and firm the skin when applied in diluted form. Lime essential oil also helps add shine to hair and balances oil production in the scalp. In other uses, the oil's sharp, bright aroma helps lift your mood. Its purifying qualities also act as an air freshener and reduce unpleasant odors when diffused[8].
