In several countries, Long pepper fruit is commonly used to cure leprosy and tuberculosis. The phytochemical content of Javanese chili oil includes octadecalidine, piperine, pipernonaline, guineensine, methyl piperate, N-isobutyl-2E,4E,8Z-eicosatrienamide and β-sitosterol[1,2,3].

BOTANICAL AT A GLANCE:

The species Piper longum is native to South Asia (Deccan peninsula), while the closely related Piper retrofractum is native to Southeast Asia and is mostly cultivated in Indonesia and Thailand. These two species are often not clearly differentiated in the spice trade.

Long pepper is an annual plant that grows climbing on climbing poles and has nodes (segments), the stem shape is round and large, with a diameter of ± 5-7 cm, the length of the main stem segment is 2.93-9.82 cm, the color of the stem varies from black, brown to blackish brown.

Long pepper are widely used as raw materials for making traditional medicines, modern medicines and for mixing drinks. The spicy taste that the fruit gives off comes from the piperine compound. A number of diseases can be treated with long pepper. The parts that can be used are old but not yet ripe fruit, roots and dried leaves [3,4,5].

HISTORY:

Piper consists of about 1200 species, distributed pantropically but occurring mostly in the neotropics. More than 400 species have been recorded for the Malaysian region. Most pepper spices come from South and Southeast Asia. P. cubeba is native to Indonesia (Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan) and is also cultivated in Java, less frequently in Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia and rarely elsewhere. P. longum grows wild in the foothills of the Himalayas in northeastern India. It is widely cultivated in India and Sri Lanka but only occasionally elsewhere, including Southeast Asia. P. retrofractum lives wild from Thailand, Indo-China, Malaysia and the Philippines to Maluku, and lives semi-wild in the Ryukyu Islands. It is also cultivated in northern Peninsular Malaysia and Java.

Old European sources often have difficulty distinguishing long chilies from chilies, both of which are hot and elongated in shape. The name long pepper was used for both spices in the 16th century[3,6].
