DESCRIPTION:

Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans Houtt) is a native Indonesian spice that has economic value and is versatile. This is because every part of the nutmeg plant can be used in various industries such as the food, medicine and cosmetics industries.

Our mace nutmeg oil is obtained from dry aryl extraction using the steam distillation method, the main components produced from this extraction are α-pinene, sabinene, 2-β-pinene, and myristicin. The resulting oil is pale yellow to brownish in color.

Researchers have confirmed the biological activities of mace nutmeg essential oil, namely antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antimalarial, anticonvulsant, hepatoprotective, antiparasitic, insecticidal and nematocidal from MFEO[1,2,3].

 

BOTANICAL AT A GLANCE:

Mace is native to the Spice Islands (Maluku) in Indonesia, this small evergreen tree is also cultivated in the Caribbean, Malaysia, and India, where it is used in everything from cooking, perfumery, soap making, and more. Nutmeg has a strong, rich, spicy, and slightly musky odor, while mace is milder with a sweet undertone, reminiscent of freshly grated nutmeg.

Nutmeg plants can grow well in open environments, their canopy will be shady and their height can reach 15 – 18 meters. The crown of the nutmeg tree tapers upwards and the tops of the leaves are blunt. The leaves are shiny green with a length of 10 - 15 cm and the length of the leaf stalk can reach 1 - 1.5 cm [4,5].

 

HISTORY:

Myristica fragrans, which produces nutmeg and mace arils, is a plant native to Maluku or the Spice Islands. This product has been used for centuries in China, and Ayurvedic medicine as a remedy for digestive problems such as flatulence, stomach aches and cramps, diarrhea, nausea, and loss of appetite.

In the 18th century, Mace was classified by the French as a heart tonic and stimulant for physical and mental fatigue. Until the mid-19th century, the small island group of the Banda Islands, also known as the 'Spice Islands', was the only production site for the spices nutmeg and mace in the world.

The Banda Islands are located in the eastern part of Indonesia, in the province of Maluku. It consists of eleven small volcanic islands, called Neira, Gunung Api, Banda Besar, Rhun, Ai, Hatta, Syahrir, Karaka, Manukan, Nailaka and Batu Kapal, and it has a total estimated land area of ​​8,150 hectares.
