HISTORY:
The history of Marjoram Oil dates back to
ancient European civilization. According to ancient Greek mythology, it was
Aphrodite – the goddess of love – who caused plants to smell sweet just by
touching them. The Greeks believed that Aphrodite would appear to women leaving
a sprig of Marjoram on their pillow, to announce the name of their future
partner. Likewise, the ancient Romans believed that Venus – their goddess of
love – would sprinkle marjoram on the Earth as a symbol of her beauty. In both
cultures, the scent of marjoram is associated with beauty, the scent is a
popular perfume, and the plant is a common decoration at wedding ceremonies.
Greeks used to massage Marjoram Oil on their temples and as an antidote. In
Ancient Egypt, Marjoram Oil was used as a natural antiseptic, to preserve food
and as an antidepressant. Due to its calming effects, Marjoram Oil is also used
to help people through difficult times such as sadness.
Despite differences in its use in the ancient world, Marjoram Oil has consistently been used to relieve pain, and it is still considered a happy sign of death if Marjoram grows on the grave of a loved one. In the 1800s, Marjoram Oil was reportedly first used in European perfume; and after World War II, American soldiers brought him home to the US. Currently, Marjoram Oil is used as a pain reliever, especially for menstrual pain, digestive problems and headaches. Even though it originates from Europe and the Middle East, Marjoram Oil is grown and used all over the world[5].
