method. The resulting oil is yellowish to dark brown in color, and has a
distinctive aroma and lactone aroma. Massoia essential oil has sedative-like
properties and can be used to relax and de-stress the brain and nerves to
improve sleep quality. It is delicious when used in a diffuser to create a
calming atmosphere[1,2].
BOTANICAL AT A
GLANCE:
The genus Cryptocarya
of the Lauraceae family consists of more than 350 species distributed
throughout the tropical, subtropical and temperate regions of the world.
Several species of this genus have been widely used as traditional medicine in
a number of ethnobotanical practices. The Massoia tree, C. massoy, is a species
endemic to the island of New Guinea between 400 m and 1000 m altitude.
Mesoyi or masoi
(Cryptocarya massoia (Oken) Kosterm.) is a type of tree that is related to
cinnamon. In Papua it is known as aikor or aikori. Habitus is a tree, about 25
m high. The large stem has a diameter of ± 30 cm, thick pepagan (bark) can
reach 0.5 cm and gives off a fragrant aroma. The fragrance comes from the
essential oil content known as Massoia lactone. The shape of the leaves is
round and egg-shaped which tapers towards the tip of the leaf. Sit the leaves
in a circle or opposite. The inflorescence has a long stalk ± 10 cm, appearing
near the base of the leaf. Buni fruit, has one seed[3,4,5,6].
HISTORY:
The Massoia tree, C.
massoy, is a species that grows best in rainforests and is endemic to the
island of New Guinea between 400 m and 1000 m altitude. Also grows in Sumatra.
The aromatic bark of the tree has been the subject of trade for centuries.
Massoia oil was known in the late 18th and early 19th centuries as Massoy bark, Massoia essential oil was once widely used as a natural 'coconut' flavouring. Massoia Bark has a long history of use in Indonesia. The bark is ground and used as a flavoring in dishes such as curry called gulai and nasi ikan ikan Batanghari, a rice dish. Sometimes used as a substitute for cinnamon. Javanese and Balinese women make Borbory, a warming ointment to treat inflammation and improve blood circulation. In 2016, a Pub Med study found Massoia Bark oil to be effective in fighting immunosuppression-related infections as well as supporting C. Albicans[7,8].
