Attarasa (North Sumatra), while in China it is known as May Chang. Traditionally
it is quite It is known in certain areas in Indonesia as a plant with medicinal
properties, a food additive and has cultural values.
Litsea cubeba
originates from China, Indonesia, and other areas of Southeast Asia. In China,
it grows naturally in the south and has been cultivated in the central and
eastern regions south of the Yangtze River for its various commercial uses.
Smaller numbers of this species also grow wild in Java, Sumatra and Kalimantan,
between 700 meters and 2,300 meters above sea level. It is also cultivated in
Japan and Taiwan[4,5,6].
HISTORY:
May Chang comes from
the Lauraceae family and originates from China. The common name “May Chang”
appeared recently, so, unlike other essential oils, it is still called by the
technical name Litsea Cubeba. May Chang Oil is also sometimes referred to as “Chinese
Pepper” or “Mountain Pepper”. Although not steam distilled until the 1950s, may
chang's properties have been widely revered in ancient Chinese and Ayurvedic
cultures for centuries.
May Chang Oil has been
widely used in Chinese medicine for hundreds of years, where its effects are
believed to be so powerful that it is used to treat cancer. May chang oil is
also used as a muscle relaxant, decongestant and headache reliever. This plant
has a long history in Chinese herbal medicine, and all parts of the plant are
used for the treatment of asthma, backache, chills, digestive problems,
dysmenorrhea, headaches, and muscle aches and pains. It is believed to have
carcinostatic properties and is therefore used to treat cancer.
Recent research in China investigated the ability of may chang essential oil to regulate cardiac arrhythmias when compared to the beta-blocker, Propranolol. The results were encouraging and showed that the drug reduced artificially induced arrhythmias from 15 minutes to 6.5 minutes, compared with the drug's performance of 15 minutes to 0.6 minutes. Impressive, for a natural treatment. Today, may chang oil is used to combat anxiety, with research supporting its use as a natural alternative to modern antidepressants[7,8].
