HISTORY:
Neroli essential oil
has long been used throughout history dating back to the ancient civilization
of Egypt when the Ancient Egyptians used it for spiritual, wellness and health
purposes. The bitter orange tree is thought to originate from the foothills of
the Himalayas and was first introduced to Europe by Genoese travelers.
In the 10th century,
bitter orange trees arrived in Al-Andalus by Arabs and were planted permanently
on the Iberian Peninsula. Over the centuries, eventually, it became the
emblematic tree of Andalusia, more specifically of Seville, therefore it is
known as the Seville orange tree.
But it was in the 17th
century when neroli gained significant fame as a fashionable perfume. The
orange flower received its name "neroli" from the Italian town
"Nerola" in honor of its Princess Anne Maria de la Tremoille who was
famous for her nickname "Princess of La Nerola".
This Italian princess
fell in love with bitter orange blossoms and was obsessed with their freshness.
He was the first to make neroli essential oil through distilling orange blossom
and it soon developed it as his favorite signature scent. With this precious
essence of neroli, he would perfume everything around him including his gloves,
bath water, clothes, and palace, and its high influence made neroli a
fashionable perfume in the world.
In traditional Persian
medicine, bitter orange peel and neroli flowers or hydrosols, are used as
neuroprotective and antidepressant agents. Use is carried out orally as an
appetizer, aphrodisiac, hepatoprotective medicinal food; and also for the
treatment of bloating, dyspepsia, diarrhea, and polymenorrhea. The peel is also
useful for gastric disorders, and is gastrotonic. Bark or flower extracts
macerated with water can be consumed orally to treat dystocia.
In traditional Chinese
medicine, it is used to treat bloating, and relieve chest congestion. In
Japanese herbal medicine, tea made from bitter orange peel can affect the
digestive system, and relax the body's muscles.
In India, the peel is used as a laxative, stomachic medicine, and emmenagogue agent. The water extract of the flowers is used to treat scurvy, fever, inflammation, and cases of nervousness and hysterics. A decoction of the fruits is used to cure cachexia caused by intermittent fever, and in cases of enlarged spleen. Dry skin is used for atonic dyspepsia. In traditional African medicine, it is used for toxemia in pregnancy, and excess fluid accumulation. The fruit and leaves have carminative, gastrotonic and antiseptic effects. In traditional Brazilian medicine, it is used to treat anxiety, insomnia, and as an anticonvulsant agent[4,7,8].
