HISTORY:

The word 'Nutmeg' comes from the Latin nux and muscada (translates to 'musky nut'). Although the common spice is now found in the kitchen of almost every home, it has a long, deadly and interesting history.

The nutmeg tree (Myristica fragrans) originates from the remote Banda Islands in Indonesia. Arabs are thought to have been the first to discover the obscure spice, and, in an effort to hide its location, began telling stories and legends about its origins. Nutmeg then entered European trade, and only the rich could afford to spend large sums of money to experience its earthy, spicy-sweet taste and aroma. Then, when medieval doctors claimed that it could be the only antidote to the Black Death pandemic, the already expensive price of the spice skyrocketed. The battle over Nutmeg only escalated in the 1600s, when the Dutch started the famous 'Nutmeg Wars' in the lands of the Banda Islands, only ending after the British invaded the region and succeeded in redistributing the nuts to East Asia.

At that time, nutmeg, along with its essential oil, was considered a mystical spice; it is believed to have aphrodisiac and hypnotic powers and to bring good luck to those who use it. In China, India, and the Middle East, it is used to arouse sexual desire, revitalize marriages, and aid fertility. Due to its main component, Myristicin, many claim that ingesting Nutmeg can also cause hallucinations, euphoria, and paranoia.

Nutmeg essential oil has also featured heavily in traditional medicine and practices in various cultures for generations. In Ancient China, for example, it was considered an important remedy for liver and stomach problems, and Indian Ayurvedic practitioners often used it to treat fever symptoms as well as relieve pain, coughs, flatulence, and menstrual problems. Additionally, Ancient Egyptians saw Nutmeg essential oil as a valuable preservative component that formed part of the embalming and mummification process[8].
