DESCRIPTION:

Since prehistoric times, onions have been used as a food seasoning by the people of Central Asia and around the Mediterranean Sea. However, onions have various biological activities so they are used as essential oils.

Our Onion Oil is obtained from extracting onion seeds using the steam distillation method. The oil produced has a strong, distinctive onion aroma with a slightly thick, brownish yellow liquid texture. This bombai oil has superior quality in terms of content and aroma compared to bombai oil in general. Onion essential oil contains sulfur compounds called thiosulfinates or isothiocyanates which are known to have antibacterial and antifungal effects. Onion oil is generally used to cure various digestive diseases, flu, bloating, nausea, ulcers, dysentery, and kill worms in the stomach [1,2,3].

BOTANICAL AT A GLANCE:

Onions are plants originating from the city of Bombai (now known as Mumbai), India. It is very likely that onions entered Indonesia with the arrival of traders from India or colonialists from the Netherlands. The Dutch once tried to cultivate onions in Padang, but failed. The land that is more suitable is considered to be Karo because the results have been proven to be very satisfactory.

Its use in Indonesia was initially popular in Chinese and European dishes, but recently many Indonesian dishes have used it. Onions have a distinctive aroma compared to ordinary shallots, the bulbs are formed from layers of leaves that enlarge and stick together. The tree grows straight up, the roots are fibrous and not too long (± 10c), the leaves are shaped like pipes but are flat, dark green and larger in size than ordinary red onions. The false stem is a leaf midrib and produces a trail of rings, the base of the midrib widens and thickens to form a large swelling which functions to store food reserves, the swelling itself is an onion bulb [4,5,6].

HISTORY:

Onions or Allium cepa are among the oldest known cultivated plants, and were cultivated in Egypt, China, and India before the beginning of recorded history. Onions have been widely described as originating from Iran, the western Indian subcontinent and Central Asia. Traces of onions recovered from Bronze Age settlements in China indicate that onions were used as early as 5000 BC, not only for their flavor, but also for their durability in storage and transportation.

The ancient Egyptians revered the onion bulb, seeing its round shape and concentric rings as a symbol of eternal life. Onions were used in Egyptian burials, as evidenced by traces of onions found in Ramesses IV's eye socket. Pliny the Elder wrote about the use of onions and cabbage in Pompeii. He documented Roman beliefs about onions' ability to improve eye ailments, aid sleep, and cure everything from mouth sores and toothaches to dog bites, lumbago, and even dysentery.

Archaeologists excavating Pompeii have discovered gardens similar to those in Pliny's detailed narrative. According to texts collected in the 5th/6th century AD under the auspices of the author "Apicius" (said to be a culinary expert), onions were used in many Roman recipes. Ancient Egypt is known to have supplied onions (shallots and garlic) to the Roman Empire. In the Age of Discovery, onions were brought to North America by the first European settlers, only to find the plant widely available and used in Native American gastronomy. According to diaries kept by some of the first English colonists, onion bulbs were one of the first crops planted by the Pilgrim Fathers. Onions contain essential oils, permanent oils, protein, cellulose, sugar and minerals. The essential oil content of onions depends on the onion variety used and the distillation process used. Onion seed oil has also been used for its medicinal properties in various ancient systems of medicine including the Unani system and the Ayurvedic system[7,8].
