The resulting oil is orange to golden orange in color with a strong tar-like, herbal aroma. This oil has a strong yet warming herbal aroma with a camphor base and a dry woody aroma throughout. Its chemical content gives OEO its antibacterial, antioxidant, anticancer, antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties [1,2,3].

BOTANICAL AT A GLANCE:

Oregano (Origanum vulgare) is a species of flowering plant in the mint family Lamiaceae. It is native to the Mediterranean region, but is widely naturalized elsewhere in the temperate Northern Hemisphere. Oregano (Origanum vulgare) is a sprawling woody shrub that can grow up to 1 m tall. Popularly used as a culinary herb in Italian cuisine, dried Oregano leaves are also used in traditional medicine to treat colds, indigestion and stomach aches, due to the high content of carvacrol and thymol naturally found in its essential oil. This plant is easy to care for, best grown in full sun and well-drained soil[4,5].

HISTORY:

Oregano has been used throughout history for thousands of years, and can be traced back to 3000 BC. During Roman and Greek times, it was one of the most widely used herbs for medicinal purposes. It is believed to originate from countries sitting in the Mediterranean and throughout central Europe. Oil of Oregano is mostly used to treat headaches, and is believed to work as an antidote to snake venom, because the Greek philosopher Aristotle used Oil of Oregano after he saw animals chewing the herb after they had been stung by snakes. Apart from medical use, Oregano Oil is also used to preserve food, as an antiseptic and as a relaxing massage oil.

Like most oils used thousands of years ago, Oil of Oregano was a popular oil used during religious ceremonies such as weddings, as well as prayers and spiritual acts. Often graves are covered with dried oregano so that the deceased can rest in peace. It was only in the early 1900s that this oil became famous on a global scale, as the herb was (and still is) easy to obtain and commonly used in a variety of dishes, especially in Italian, Greek, Turkish and Cypriot cuisine to add. extra flavor to the dish. Today, Oregano Oil is still popular in aromatherapy, and the ingredient is in many people's homes and restaurants to enhance the taste of many dishes[6,7].
