Cymbopogon martinii is native to India and Indochina, but is widely cultivated in many places for its aromatic essential oil. Commonly known as Palmarosa, this plant has other names: Indian geranium, ginger grass, rosha, and rosha grass.

Our palmarosa oil is obtained from the extraction of Cymbopogon Martini grass (leaves) using the steam distillation method. The oil produced is a pale yellow to bright yellow liquid. In Ayurvedic medicine, palmarosa oil is used to treat skin problems and relieve pain due to the biological activity of its compounds[1,2,3,4].

BOTANICAL AT A GLANCE:

The Cymbopogon genus is widespread in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia and America. Consisting of 144 species, this genus is famous for its high essential oil content. Cymbopogon martinii is a species of grass in the genus Cymbopogon (lemongrass) native to India and Indochina but widely cultivated in many places for its aromatic oil. C. martinii grows quite tall, ranging from 1.3 to 3 m (4 ft 3 in to 9 ft 10 in) in height with a pale green color and strong thin stems. This plant is slow growing, taking three months to flower; After flowering, it can be harvested. It received the name palmarosa from the fragrant rose aroma it emits[5,6].

HISTORY:

Known in traditional Ayurvedic practice as 'Roshia', palmarosa oil is used widely in ancient medicine to help treat a number of health conditions, from bronchitis to fever and jaundice. According to Ayurvedic texts from the 14th century, palmarosa oil was also recommended for throat ailments and stubborn skin ailments. Apart from that, this oil is also used as an insect repellent. Ancient Chinese medicine would use palmarosa in a similar way, believing that the oil enhanced the body's cooling and moisturizing functions.

From East Asia, palmarosa essential oil was then shipped to Constantinople, where it was mistakenly identified by European traders as geranium. After reaching Europe at a mainstream level, it was used in a variety of soaps, cosmetics, and tobacco products. Palmarosa appears to be two things at once, simultaneously a delicate floral aroma and a Health-promoting herb[7].
