Extraction
method: Steam distillation
DESCRIPTION:
Our
patchouli oil is obtained from the extraction of dry leaves and young twigs of
Pogostemon cablin using the steam distillation method. The oil produced is a
slightly thick yellow to brownish liquid. With its distinctive aroma, patchouli
oil is an important essential oil that is widely used in perfumery. Despite its
heavy, woody, earthy characteristics and camphor odor, it has long-lasting and
strong fixative properties.
The main
and important ingredients of patchouli oil are patchouli alcohol, α-bulnesene,
seychelene, β-caryophyllene, α-guaiene, norpatchoulenol, α-patchou-lene,
β-patchoulene and pogostol. Patchouli oil has quite a strong aroma so it lends
itself well to blending well with other essential oils and provides a strong,
alluring smell and long-lasting qualities that help prevent evaporation.
Because it has strong and long-lasting fixative properties, patchouli is widely
used as an important base ingredient in many fragrance products. In addition,
patchouli oil has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal,
anti-depressant and insect repellent properties[1,2,3,4].
BOTANICAL AT A GLANCE:
Pogostemon
is estimated to have around 80 species spread across South Asia, Southeast
Asia, China, Japan and 1 species found in Australia. In Indonesia, there are
three types of Pogostemon which can be distinguished based on morphological
characters, oil quality and resistance to biotic and abiotic stress, namely P.
cablin, P. hortensis, and P. heyneatus.
Pogostemon
cablin is known as Aceh patchouli, P. heyneatus is known as Javanese patchouli
and P. hortensis is known as soap patchouli. Pogostemon cablin is one type of
the Pogostemon genus which has very high economic value with higher patchouli
oil production compared to P. horthensis, P. hyneanus and P. plectranthoide.
Patchouli
is an upright or climbing herb up to 1 m high. Based on the nature of its
growth, the patchouli plant is an annual plant with branched, dense and angular
stems. Leaves are decusate opposite (cross facing) with thin or thick leaf
membranes with short hairs. Javanese patchouli (P.heyneatus Benth.) is also
called forest patchouli. This patchouli originates from India and entered
Indonesia and grows wild in several forests on the island of Java. This type of
plant only has an oil content of around 0.5 - 1.5%. This type of leaves and
twigs do not have fine hairs and the tips of the leaves are slightly tapered
[5,6,7].
HISTORY:
The
warm, spicy, musky and sensual aroma of Patchouli oil is commonly associated
with the hippy generation or referred to as the "smell of the
sixties". This oil comes from the leaves of the highly valued Patchouli
plant, which belongs to the aromatic plant family such as Lavender, Mint and
Sage.
Patchouli
is a native plant and is widely cultivated in tropical areas such as Brazil,
Hawaii and Asian areas such as China, India, Malaysia and India. Traditionally,
patchouli oil is used in Asian countries as a traditional medicine to treat
hair problems such as dandruff, oily scalp, skin irritations such as dryness,
acne and eczema.
The use
of patchouli oil began to spread in the 1960s, but patchouli began to be used
hundreds of years earlier; its high value inspired early European traders to
exchange Patchouli for gold. A pound of patchouli is worth a pound of gold. It
is also believed that Pharaoh Tutankhamun, better known as "King
Tut", was buried with 10 gallons of Patchouli Essential Oil in his tomb.
The
history of patchouli was also used to scent fabrics in India such as fine silk
and shawls to clean them of moths and other insects in the 1800s.
Patchouli
oil is believed to receive its name from the Hindi word "pacholi",
which means "fragrant". Another theory states that its name comes
from the Old Tamil words "patchai" and "ellai", meaning
"green leaves". The story goes that the scent of Patchouli Oil became
the standard by which cloth would be judged as a true "Oriental"
cloth. Even English and French clothing makers would scent their fabrics with
artificial Patchouli Oil to increase clothing sales. There are 3 species of
Patchouli, namely Pogostemon Cablin, Pogostemon Heyneanus, and Pogostemon
Hortensis. Of these, the Cablin species is the most popular and is cultivated
for its essential oil, as its therapeutic properties give it a relative
advantage over other species.
Patchouli Essential Oil is currently used for various purposes including fragrances, aromatherapy, cosmetic products, home cleaning products, and laundry detergent. Through any of these methods, the calming aroma of essential oils relieves anxiety, stress, and depression, making them effective for achieving relaxation, especially in meditation[8,9,10].
