DESCRIPTION:
Generally, pennyroyal
comes from the leaves or flowers of Mentha pulegium or Hedeoma pulegoides, a
plant from the mint family originating from Europe. Our pennyroyal oil is
obtained from the extraction of the pennyroyal flower plant (Mentha pulegium L)
using the steam distillation method. The resulting oil is a yellow to orange
liquid with a distinctive woody mint aroma. Pennyroyal extract contains many
components of pulegone and other monoterpenes. Traditionally, Pennyroyal is
believed to purify the blood. This oil is generally used as an antidote to
spasmodic, nervous and hysterical attacks.
Currently, pennyroyal oil is used in aromatherapy, as a bath additive
and insect repellent, but it is not recommended for internal
consumption[1,2,3].
BOTANICAL AT A
GLANCE:
Mentha pulegium L. Or
sometimes called Pulegium vulgare Mill. Or or Minthe pulegia (L.) and is
commonly known as pennyroyal in Europe. This species is a native aromatic plant
widely used in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.
Pennyroyal is the
smallest of the Mints and is very different in habit from the others. Two forms
of the plant are found in Great Britain: the most common, the decumbens
variety, has weak, prostrate, obtusely rectangular stems, 3 inches to a foot
long, which root readily at joints or lower nodes. The leaves are opposite,
short-stemmed, more or less hairy on both sides, oval-round, grayish green,
about 1 to 1 1/2 inches long and 1/2 inch wide. The flowers are in groups of
ten or a dozen, rising in tiers one above the other at the nodes, where the
spring leaves are in pairs, starting about the middle of the stem, they are
reddish purple to violet blue, and bloom during July and August. The seeds are
light brown, oval and very small. The characteristic of the M. pulegium plant
is a strong mint aroma, showing a prostatic shape except during flowering when
the plant is upright, and blooming in clusters of pink to blue flowers[4,5].
HISTORY:
Since the US Congress
passed the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act in October 1994, all
manufactured forms of pennyroyal have carried warning labels prohibiting their
use by pregnant women. This substance is not regulated by the FDA. Pennyroyal
essential oil is very concentrated, it should not be taken internally because
it is very toxic, even in small doses, the poison can cause death.
Complications have been reported from attempts to use oil for self-inflicted
abortions. In 1978, a pregnant woman was hospitalized two hours after consuming
approximately two tablespoons (30 ml) of pennyroyal oil; he later died. The oil
can be used for aromatherapy, as a bath additive and as an insect repellent.
Pennyroyal tea is a tincture made from the herb, the tincture is widely considered safe to consume in limited quantities. It has been used traditionally and reportedly successfully as an emmenagogue (menstrual flow stimulant) or as an abortifacient. In 1994 a young woman died of an undetected ectopic pregnancy while having a self-induced abortion using pennyroyal tea, reports say she had consumed the tea for longer than the recommended time of five days. The most popular use of tea today is to soothe the stomach. Other medicinal uses reported throughout history include fainting, flatulence, gallbladder, gout, hepatitis (possibly Hepatitis A), lung cleanser, gum strengthener and, when ground with vinegar, tumor cure, although there is little or no evidence medical treatment in one of these treatments[6].
